Was in RS yesterday and asked the same question.
They said they will no longer make the catalog.
You must now go online to see it.

Radio Shack told me that a new CD would be out at end of August. No
more catalog.CD will cost about $6.00.

If its going to be online only. The Search Engine on Radio Shack.com
will be limited and hard to use. I have been a customer with radio
shack since 1982. 1992 I have been shopping for Radio Shack shortwave
radios. I bought the DX-380,390, 392, 398.. They have got to have a
2003 catalog that is printed. If not alot of customers and SWLs, HAMs
will be disappointed. electronicdx.

I gotta agree with that Phil, very difficult to search, poorly organized. I've been
there many times and taken more than five minutes to locate an item I could find in
the printed catalog in 20 seconds. Also, the website makes it impossible to view and
compare one model against another. They do claim to be reworking their website for
the August release (funny though, I thought August was almost over already).

I emailed RS about their new catalog, and despite what Kim said about a CD version,
RS customer service didn't mention one at all. But definitely NO more printed
catalogs.

I also asked about the future of their short-wave offerings. Their entire response
is quoted below.

jim menning

"Hello Jim:

Thanks for the email -- and for the feed back.

While we will not have a printed catalog this year, we have found that many
of our customers are very comfortable using our on-line catalog. The
on-line catalog has a few advantages over the printed version. We are able
to update information much more quickly and when an item misses the normal
August catalog introduction we don't have to wait for another year before
adding it.

New items are first featured on the home page of our web-site and then they
are shown in the "Cool Things" area (this is the second choice under the
Special Features category about half way down the left hand margin of our
home page). Of course they are also in the right area in the on-line
catalog itself.

You may want to check our online catalog to see how it works. Simply go to
our homepage at http://www.RadioShack.com and you will see the normal
category listings (from the printed catalog) under the heading "Product
Catalog" (of course) at the top left of the page.

To review stereo gear, for example, select "TV/Audio/Video" from the top
left under the Product Catalog. On the next page you will see a number of
sub-categories under "Audio" at the center of the page.

We are also working on upgrading this on-line catalog, and the new version
is scheduled for release in August (to coincide with the normal release date
of our catalog).

Stores currently stock 3 Short-wave radios and 3 more will be available by
special order by mid-September for a 6 product line that spans price points
from $39.99 to $499.99. All models are or will be Grundig brand.

To better assist you with future questions, if you need to respond to this
email please use the REPLY option.

Thanks,
RadioShack Customer Care
Mike Money"

Anyone who would pay Radio Shack
$6.00 for a glitzy-interactive
CD-ROM based catalog is someone who
I've got a nice bridge in NYC to
offer them - real cheap ;)

(no wonder the quarterly earnings on their
stock dividens to the shareholders is down
with "marketing concepts" such as this one)

thanks Jim! rat shack needs to fix their site like walmart or officemax. why
not put the 'catalog' online as a pdf? $6 cd? they are not N*STINK and we
are not 13 year old girls. rat shack's e-mail was funny... signed by "mike

As long as Mike gave me the option to respond, I sent him the following:

"Hello Mike Money:

That was my fear, that there would be no catalog, and we would
have to rely on your website. I've used your website many times,
and find it takes five minutes to find what you're looking for,
as opposed to 20 seconds in the printed catalog. Your search box
selection is horrendous. The newsgroups are full of complaints
about how difficult it is to use that site. It's often worse
than the incompetent people staffing many of your stores.

For example, if I am looking for a UHF indoor TV Antenna, and I
list exactly that in your search box, it produces 803 matches in
10 categories, 6 of which just say "antennas". The search box
should be the most direct path to find what we want, yet it is
the worst way. If I would enter that specific of a search on
another site, it would give me only the few items that actually
are "UHF indoor TV Antennas".

Now you want me to click on TV/Audio/Video, then click on
Antennas & Video Distribution, then click on indoor, and wade
through two screens to see what you have to offer.

If I know exactly what I want, and have the correct name for it,
there is no reason why a direct search shouldn't locate it.

If your site is that difficult to use to find a simple item such
as an antenna, imagine the customers that will have trouble
finding something like a connector which they know what it looks
like, and where it is used, but not the exact terminology or your
site's hierarchy.

Or do you want all your customers to have to drive down to the
store so your salesmen can push the phones and satellite dishes
at us?

If you are taking polls on complaints of the lack of future
catalogs, please enter my name!

good letter Jim, i hope they READ it! make it like walmart's site, add free
shipping, and i would be on there buying things every other day. Rat Shack
is making a BIG mistake. the site seems to show you every item they've sold
since the beginning of time... and trying to make $6 off a catalog is a good
way to put themselves out of business... those catalogs keep people buying
their junk... my copy is way OLD: "sorry, we had LOTS of them but now we're
down to only the store copy". yeah, and my name is santa claus.

And the Real Question is...
When will RS put the GS800Ms "On Sale" for $375 ?

Even RS Part Numbers frequently lead to a list of redundant word

exactly... today i entered "antenna AM loop"... i had to repost the
information 11 times... the search engine finally comes up with 550
matches... AFAIK they only have one &%$#ing loop in the store! then i start
using their 'product catalog' drill-down menu... reposting 3 times.. getting
nowhere... i'm off to 'view by catagory'... THIS looks better but upon
closer inspection the catagories are screwy... there is no catagory called
'RADIO'... isn't this RADIO shack? this site sucks, screwed again... then i
put 'loop' into the search engine, yes i'm getting desperate: great only 64
matches... number 13, i hit paydirt... AM LOOP ANTENNA... their website
stalls again... report... i made it! 10 minutes later now i see their
loop... i have climbed Rat Shack's equivalent of mount everest. deja vu.

i hope that when the guy who made the site dies that God sits him down and
says "and you know what your worst sin was?" "that time i didn't use a
pocket protector and spilled ink on my shirt?" "NO, WORSE, IT'S THAT
TERRIBLE WEBSITE YOU DESIGNED!" i doubt this offense will get him into hell
but if there is a Radio Shack in heaven God may revoke his Battery Club
Card.

What!? No more Sangean radios? Too bad.

What!??!? No more cool printed catalogs? Bummer.

WHAT!? i have to use a partially-completed website to shop?
Bullshit.

RadioShack is going down. Wonder why? By all means, eliminate
electronic parts, push ridiculously overpriced, out-of-date computers,
mobile phones and dish T.V., underpay/undertrain your sales staff, and
stock your shelves with Chinese shit. Perfect. Sounds like an
American formula for success, don't it?

Having worked at a Rat Sack for five years, I know the corners that
are cut, the little bullshit deals made, and the general response of
the retail giant to accusations of promoting human rights abuses and
landfill poisoning. Again, my fervent hope is that Radio Shack is
consumed by its own greed, that its stores nationwide close, that the
stock price drops to pennies.

Then I can shop their "Going Out Of Business Sale."

hardly anything that could be called

corner.Even stereo equip has a minimal presence in the store.I did buy
some batteries,a coax jumper and a pair of awesome computer speakers
w/volume and tone control that run off 12v that I found on the

I quit going to Rat Shack a couple of months back, when then dicked me
around on the CD player. I have not walked back in the door. Beside
that, the manager of the one by me is a weasel, who I would like to
punch his face off, but I'm non-violent. When I bought the YB 400 from
him he asked me what the YB stood for. I told him Yacht Boy, and he
acted like I was lying to him. I seen him today in the grocery, and he
was counting out pennies and dimes to buy a bottle of pop.

As far as radios go, they don't have anything I want anymore anyway, I
can find anything on line like that. It is a shame, that there is not
another store close by to go and buy the related paraphanalia for my
hobbies, but I will go to R&L's if I have to. It's not that far.

The online catalog is a joke. The search box stinks. I have not visted
that in a long time.
I don't need a cell phone, but if I did, I would not go there. I
shopped there for many years, but now, I would not care if the whole
thing went down the tubes.

It has less to do with pay, and more to do with the person doing
the hiring. One RS mangler actually said the words: "I don't want
some Einstein in here, I want someone who can hit a sales figure
with everyone who walks in the door. Some smart-assed kid who knows
all about electronics is going to tell people what they don't need.
I need someone who's not going to do that."

There are plenty of qualified, knowledgable people out there who
will bring expertise to the job regardless of the pay scale.

This Shack close to me, used to have a very good manager. The guy knew
his electronics, and if you asked him a question, he knew the answer,
and believed in customer courtesy. I knew the guy for a long time.
Last Christmas, he died in his sleep. Now, this kid that took over is a
joke. I agree, at one time, the Shack did seem magical when you went
in. For anyone who had any interest in electronics, that was the place
to go. Now, it's toys and phones.
It's a shame.

Rememmber Rat Shack is mostly trying to appeal to the average joe who
knows really nothing about electronics. There main customer is not the
radio hobbyist. With there cute little "cool things" and pictures of
people wearing hip clothes carrying the Rat Shack gadgets show it all.

They've only pushed a cell phone on my once. One time I went into the
RadioShack for an extension speaker to add to my shack one of the guys
went "this for your car for a cellphone" I said " I don't have a
cellphone" The other guy most likely misunderstood what I said and
grinned and said "you looking for a cell phone"

This is what they are trained to sell and we can't insult them because
there doing there jobs. We need to complain to the higher "power" of
RadioShack.

When I went to the store to get one I didn't believe the guy at first.
In the past I bought everything based on what I saw in the catalog.
Those decisions were made in the one room in the house where I would
never have a computer! They should realize that when business times
are tough they shouldn't make it harder to find stuff. Digikey.com
still has a paper catalog of components, and that's where I'll buy
them now.

So does Mouser....and I believe you also get a CD of the catalog.
Re Radio Shack....I used to just page thru them one page at a time.
Many times I see something I wasn't looking for and decided I wanted
one and would buy it.

They're best bet is to make the catalog and sell them like they used
to. I bought one several years ago....you got a discount on your next
purchase.
