Having read a couple of posts about finding modifiable old stock at
Radio Shack, I thought about one of the local RS stores that is
designated an 'outlet'; it sells 'refurbished' RS stuff at a good
discount with a 30-day warranty.

I dropped by last night, and lo and behold, there was a Pro 2026 with
a date code of 11A3 (which someone had mentioned was a good one to
get), so I bought it for $150, half-expecting to find the old innards
replaced with a more recent system board. But no! There was a
clippable L201 jumper, and I'm once again in Fat (cellular) City for
the first time since my good ol' Pro 2004 crapped out a while back.

I suppose every big city must have an 'outlet' Radio Shack; a quick
check may really pay off. Good luck!

Nice catch! I got mine from a Radio Shack store early this year.
They are out there, just not everywhere!

I have a PRO-2026 and It has a code of 11A2. Whats a L201 jumper? and what
happens when you cut it. Is the one I have capable of picking up more
cellular frequencies?

You open up the radio, cut the jumper labeled L201 on the circuit board,
and this will enable ALL of the cellular frequencies. These range from
824-849, and 869-894. These are the true frequencies that cellphones
operate on.

If you've already been listening to cellphones, you've been probably
listening to frequencies other than the above. What is happening is that
you are receiving "images", where the radio receives a strong signal
which is on a frequency to which it is not tuned directly. Listening to
the "true" cell frequencies will give you somewhat clearer reception.

I also have a Pro-2026 I bought about 3 years ago. It has a date code of 6A3. I am fairly new to all
of this, I am a fireman and used it for monitoring local police/fire/resuce but after reading some
posts I am interested in other things.

Poeple mention this date code thing, what does mine mean and what can I do to this besides the above?
If anyone can point me to a resource or fill me in on this particular scanner, please let me know.

Thanks in advance for any help.

The date code of 6A3 means month 6 year 3 (1993), generally, the cutoff
point for scanners is that those made March 1994 and after cannot be
easily modified for cellular. Some made before this date can, it varies
by the model. The 2026 can be easily modified by cutting a wire inside
if it has an "earlier" date. The industry played make-believe for many
years (1986-1993) selling scanners which were cellular-"incapable" yet
all you had to do was cut a little wire inside to unblock them.
