Navy Orders Seconds on Digital Modular Radio;
Motorola's Technology to Offer a Smarter and
More Synchronized Solution

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 6, 2001 via NewsEdge Corporation -

Motorola (NYSE:MOT) Friday announced that the U.S. Navy Space and Naval
Warfare System Command (SPAWAR) has awarded a second production order of
$39.6 million to Motorola under their AN/USC-61 Digital Modular Radio (DMR)
program, bringing the total contract value to $95.6 million.

Based on Motorola's wireless information transfer technology, the DMR is a
software-controlled and re-configurable digital system that allows the Navy
to increase flexibility and provides interoperability among diverse legacy
radios while providing a migration path to future upgrades. This most recent
award is a continuation of Motorola's role in enabling the Navy to
successfully field Software Definable Radio (SDR) technology.

It also demonstrates Motorola's commitment to advancing the Joint Tactical
Radio System (JTRS) Joint Program Office's (JPO) vision of affordable
interoperable radios. Motorola's wireless information transfer technology is
being used under a separate contract with the JPO to validate its open
standard Software Communications Architecture (SCA).

"Motorola is committed to work with the Navy to further assure the DMR will
be compliant with the JTRS envisioned for joint services usage," said John
Cole, vice president and general manager of Motorola's Information Security
Systems and Products Division. "Software Defined Radios are the new standard
of the radio world -- combining computing, networking and radio technology
into a single product.

"Motorola's innovative design permits users to change characteristics in
battle or remotely, which will help save time, save space and offers a
smarter, solution through improved situational awareness."

The DMR is part of the Motorola Wireless Information Transfer System (WITS)
product line and it employs commercial-standard processors and software to
provide increased flexibility and extended product life.

The DMR enables the Navy to train its radio operators on one platform and
replace numerous, previously incompatible systems with a single system which
communicates seamlessly with different armed services as well as the U.S.
Coast Guard and NATO allies.

"The Motorola units demonstrated the key features of re-programmability,
operation with existing radios and mechanical endurance for the challenging
environments aboard surface ships and submarines," said Capt. Madsen, SPAWAR
PMW-179. "The DMR will replace the single purpose radios allowing greater
flexibility for our fleet users."

The most significant advantage of a WITS-enabled, software-programmable
radio system is that a user can change the radio's bandwidth, modulation,
security and waveforms with software commands, rather than the current, more
costly approach of replacing system hardware.

In addition, since operators need to train on only one system and maintain a
single set of spares, customers should achieve a lower total cost of
ownership over the life of the product.

A key element in the Motorola DMR is its embeddable Advanced INFOSEC Machine
(AIM), which recently received Type 1 Certification from the National
Security Agency. With its on-board Secure Operating System, it
simultaneously operates on multiple channels using different algorithms,
enabling it to potentially replace many standard encryption functions with a
single device.
