Made for Dancin, But Not Built to Last: The Lost Songs of 1979

Posted: 10 Jun 2020 09:00 AM PDT
https://radioinsight.com/ross/188615/made-for-dancin-but-not-built-to-last-the-lost-songs-of-1979/

Just before disco fever peaked and a rock radio station’s “Disco
Demolition” promotion gave rise to a disco backlash, there emerged a
certain type of dance record: the bandwagon-jumping song from an artist
dramatically outside the genre. Think of it as the era of “disco
dilettantism.” Not all those acts were in search of the career reinvention
that had made the Bee Gees stars again. Many were just following the music,
soon to wander off as pop changed again. Gloria Gaynor and Sister Sledge
saw lasting career downturns; Rod Stewart, Paul McCartney, ELO, and Barbra
Streisand kept making hits.
But more than 40 years later, there is a lot of pop disco among the top 15
songs of 1979 with the highest “lost factor” — our calculation of the
distance between a song’s success at the time and its availability on
broadcast radio now. We’ve been taking the top 100 hits of each year
between 1978 and 1989 (so far), assigning them points based on their
year-end chart placing (starting with 100 points for the No. 1 song of the
year) and dividing them by the number of spins a song received in the
previous week on U.S. and Canadian radio, according to Nielsen/BDS.
It won’t surprise those who read this series’ first article about the “Lost
Factor” and 1982’s hit songs that an MOR ballad tops the list. But a lot of
late ‘70s disco was an extension of ‘60s MOR and ‘70s soft pop, which is
why many of them populate our top 15 as well. Teen idols have typically had
high lost factors, and Leif Garrett’s one-song disco career (as well as TV
star David Naughton’s sole foray to radio) are now scarce on the radio as
well. Then-TV movie star Rex Smith’s MOR ballad also put him in double
jeopardy and in our top 15.
When calculating the hits of 1978, I was generally surprised by the
relative endurance (at least at some small level) of so many of them. The
“lost factor” is higher for 1979. There are 51 songs that have a 1.0 or
higher vs. 10 in 1978. In 1980, it would go higher still (58 songs). There
are also 21 songs from 1979 that received fewer than 10 spins a week,
compared to only 10 from the year before.
Throughout our “lost factor” series, reader response has generally been to
declare that 80% of the songs on our list remain lost for a reason. That
there is no consensus on the “good” 20% is why you don’t hear any of them
on the radio much now. As with 1978, I find myself wanting to write a brief
for Olivia Newton-John, again spurned with “A Little More Love,” or what I
consider other perfectly good hit records. Ian Matthews’ “Shake It” and
Roger Voudouris’ “Get Used to It” are songs I always enjoy on specialty
programming. Some of the songs a little further down John Stewart’s “Gold”
and Suzi Quatro & Chris Norman’s “Stumblin’ In” — I could probably hear
more regularly. But did I mention I graduated high school that spring?
If you’ve seen the Top 100 Lost Songs of the ‘80s, you know that I decided
not to include Streisand & Donna Summer’s “No More Tears (Enough Is
Enough)” on that chart. While every year has some chart-cutoff holdover
from the previous, that song peaked in early December and just felt like a
‘70s relic. That’s why it’s among our top 15 for 1979. It’s also why I’m
showing 16 songs, in case you’re a purist and wonder what song was
displaced.
Here are the top “lost factor” hits of 1979, based on points for their
standing for the year divided by the number of plays they receive now. In
parenthesis is the “lost factor,” followed by the number of spins the songs
received in the U.S. and Canada according to NielsenBDS in the week prior
to my calculations.

Melissa Manchester, “Don’t Cry Out Loud” (lost factor 38, spins last week 2)
Roger Voudouris, “Get Used to It” (18, 0)
Leif Garrett, “I Was Made for Dancin’” (16, 4)
Barbra Streisand & Donna Summer, “No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)” (16, 4)
Cher, “Take Me Home” (15, 3)
David Naughton, “Makin’ It” (15, 6)
Alice Cooper, “How You Gonna See Me Now” (14, 0)
Barbra Streisand, “The Main Event/Fight” (13, 5)
Olivia Newton-John, “A Little More Love” (11, 8)
Donna Summer, “MacArthur Park” (10, 9)
Ian Matthews, “Shake It” (9, 3)
Neil Diamond & Barbra Streisand, “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” (9, 9)
Maxine Nightingale, “Lead Me On” (7, 11)
Randy Vanwarmer, “Just When I Needed You Most” (6, 12)
Village People, “In the Navy” (5, 10)
Rex Smith, “You Take My Breath Away” (5, 3)

And here are the songs that now get the most monitored spins at broadcast
radio, compared to their year-end placing for 1979. It’s worth noting that
while these songs have almost always been pop/rock — songs that can play
not just on Classic Hits and AC, but also Classic Rock and Adult Hits
formats — two are disco-era R&B classics. If we had continued down the
list, we would have found “I Will Survive” at No. 18, “Got to Be Real” at
No. 20, and “We Are Family” at No. 21.

Michael Jackson, “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough”
Van Halen, “Dance the Night Away” (the title was bandwagon jumping, even if
the song wasn’t)
Robert Palmer, “Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)”
Electric Light Orchestra, “Don’t Bring Me Down” (the more overtly disco
“Shine a Little Light” has a 3.0 “lost factor” — which would have put it at
No. 26 on the above list
Earth, Wind & Fire, “September”

We’ve now calculated the “Lost Factor” for every year between 1978 and
1989. Thus far, I’ve avoided going earlier. The ‘80s have clear winners and
losers in the endurance test. For the ‘70s, and certainly for a ‘60s
universe of music that has been reduced by Classic Hits radio to “Brown
Eyed Girl,” “Respect,” and “Come Together” (if those), there’s less
opportunity to look at the contrast between what lasted and didn’t. But I
have come up with a way to identify the decades’ most extreme cases. Look
for those and my first forays into CHR’s near-obliteration in the early
‘90s next.

iHeartMedia Extends Furloughs For Additional 90 Days

Posted: 10 Jun 2020 08:20 AM PDT
https://radioinsight.com/headlines/188901/iheartmedia-extends-furloughs-for-additional-90-days/

iHeartMedia has announced it will extend the furloughs it initiated at the
end of March for an additional 90 days.

In a memo to employees, Chief People Officer Lorna Hagen noted the lockdown
of businesses and communities across the country due to the COVID-19 virus
and related restrictions has lasted far longer than anticipated and has had
a significant impact on advertising revenue. She stated that due to those
impacts the company would not be returning to full office staffing levels
for some time. Those effected by the first round on furloughs, which
effected many departments including promotions, engineering, production,
and others, will now be out of work through the end of September. This does
not affect the two weeks of unpaid furlough all other salaried employees
were required to take starting at the end of April.

iHeart joins Beasley Media, which extended its furloughs through the end of
the year, in extending its furloughs.

The memo from Hagen follows:

Team,

As we’re sure you’ve read, the lockdown of businesses and communities
across the country due to the COVID-19 virus and related restrictions has
lasted far longer than anticipated and has had a significant impact on
advertising revenue.  Although we as a company are beginning to return to
the office in a very limited way, due to these business circumstances, we
will not return to full office staffing levels for some time.

As a result of these longer than expected impacts, a number of companies
are extending employee furloughs – and unfortunately we will be doing so as
well, extending your furlough period for another 90 days. We continue to
expect that the furlough, which began on April 4, 2020, will be temporary.
We know this is not what you hoped to hear, nor is it what we had hoped to
do.

We consider you an important part of iHeart, and we will continue to offer
medical, dental, and vision benefits to you, as we have done, through this
extended furlough period.  Please note that there are important updates to
your eligibility for iHeartMedia’s Short and Long-Term Disability Plans,
and the Life and Accidental Death Dismemberment (ADD) Plans which are
included in the attached addendum to the Temporary Leave Guide.

Be assured that should the situation change and point to a speedier
economic recovery or staffing need, we will notify you and bring you back
as soon as we can.  If anything changes with you, or if we can offer any
guidance or assistance, please contact us at HR...@iheartmedia.com. If your
employment is currently terminable at will, this notice does not affect
that status.

We are truly sorry that you have to go through this. We know these are
tough times and we very much appreciate your hanging in there with us.

Thank you.

Lorna Hagen

Steve Holstein Exits Mornings At WIXY Champaign After 24 Years

Posted: 10 Jun 2020 05:24 AM PDT
https://radioinsight.com/headlines/188896/steve-holstein-exits-mornings-at-wixy-champaign-after-24-years/

Morning host Steve Holstein has exited Saga Communications Country 100.3
WIXY-FM Champaign IL after 24 years with the station as the company
accelerates cutbacks.

Holstein had been in mornings WIXY-FM since 1996 and also publishes show
prep site InterPrep. With Holsteins departure, the station has moved
Program Director/afternoon host Kurtis Allen to mornings alongside co-host
Melissa Anfield.

An award-winning radio personality has left the air. Steve Holstein, host
of the Holstein Company Morning Show, will no longer be heard on WIXY-FM.
The station’s parent company terminated his contract on June 5.

Holstein said, Its a tough time for businesses that rely on advertising.
After 24 years my contract termination is disheartening but I certainly
understand the decision made by Illini Radio Group and its parent company,
Saga Communications.

Sue Grey, CEO of United Way of Champaign said, “Working with Steve over the
years has been great. His support and dedication to making our community a
better place were evident in his work at the studio as well as his
volunteer service to many local non-profits. His voice on the air will
truly be missed!”

Champaign Mayor Deb Feinen added, “Its been a pleasure to work with Steve
in my capacity as Mayor. Although being on Holstein Company was always
fun, when I was on the air with Steve he always took the time to ask
important questions. I know I join the rest of Champaign when I say that
his voice will be greatly missed as we start each day.”

Holstein joined WIXY in 1996, creating the show with community and families
in mind. During his 24 years with the station he visited over 4,000
classrooms in East Central Illinois to record the Pledge of Allegiance. He
won awards from the Illinois Broadcasters Association and the Country Music
Association. Holstein created and co-hosted the Illinois Marathons Mile
Zero pre-race show, heard by thousands of runners annually on marathon
morning. He currently serves on the Board of Directors at Stephens Family
YMCA, is a recent long-time mentor with CU 1 to 1 Mentoring, and is a
trusted voice on dozens of TV and radio commercials for local businesses.

Holstein added, The broadcasters on West Bradley Ave. are some of the best,
particularly those who were a part of my morning show for almost 25 years.
I will never forget the award-winning moments I spent with Melissa Anfield
and Andy Roberts (whose contract was terminated in 2019). Holstein Company
is no longer on the radio, but it leaves behind a legacy of great ratings
and a community connection thats rarely heard on local radio today.”

Beasley Makes More Staff & Salary Cuts As It Seeks Debt Relief

Posted: 09 Jun 2020 03:49 PM PDT
https://radioinsight.com/headlines/188881/beasley-makes-more-staff-salary-cuts-as-it-seeks-debt-relief/

The financial effects of the coronavirus pandemic continues to be felt at
broadcasters with Beasley Media making additional rollbacks this week.

In a memo to employees sent yesterday, Beasley CEO Caroline Beasley
announced that the company will extend and make additional financial
cutbacks including reducing performance based bonus distributions for
bonuses earned in Q3 and Q4, extending the 10% wage cut for salaried
full-time employees and extending the 10% reduction in hours for full-time
hourly employees through the end of 2020. The company will also be
extending all employees currently on furlough through the end of the year
but Beasley states that some may return sooner based on the needs of each
individual market. Caroline Beasley will also continue her own 20% cut in
compensation through the end of the year.

The additional cutbacks follow an SEC filing last month projecting that it
was unlikely to be able to comply with its First Lien Leverage Ratio as of
June 30, 2020 and was seeking to enter into an amendment to its credit
facility in the coming weeks, and projects that it will be in compliance
with the financial covenants, as amended, over the next twelve months. If
the Company is unable to obtain an amendment to its credit facility, it
would result in an event of default thereunder, which would materially
affect its results of operations, liquidity and financial condition.

The company also made another round of cuts this week. Among the known
departures:

Classic Rock 94.7 WCSX morning co-host Erin Vermeulen departs after three
years after being notified her contract would not be renewed. Vermeulen
joined WCSX in June 2017 to co-host mornings with Jim OBrien after
previously working at 640 KFI Los Angeles. The Detroit native has also
worked in the Denver and Phoenix markets as well as internationally in
Cairo, Dubai, and South Africa.

The Robb Show hosted by Rob Garguilo is out at nights at Classic Rock 96
K-Rock WRXK Bonita Springs/Fort Myers. Garguilo joined WRXK in January 2019
after previously serving as a producer for Bubba The Love Sponge.

Country 102.5 WKLB Boston Program Director and National Country Format
Brand Manager David Corey announced last week that he would be leaving the
company later this month after being unable to come to terms on a new
contract.

Crossing Broad reports that four unnamed staffers have been let go in
Philadelphia as well.

Caroline Beasleys memo follows:

Words cannot begin to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation for
your continued support and dedication throughout these unprecedented times.

The recent horrific and senseless tragedy that claimed the life of George
Floyd was unconscionable. As a company, we are committed to using our voice
for the positive and peaceful change needed to move our nation forward in
ensuring justice and equality for all.

The pandemic has changed the world as we know it and, as a result, has
created an unforeseen new sense of “normal” in our daily lives.

We are very grateful for your on-going commitment over the past several
months. As a result of your efforts, we have been able to support our local
communities and make a real difference in the lives of our listeners and
their families during their greatest time of need.

Similar to other companies, Beasley has evolved the way we approach our
daily operations as a result of the economic impact caused by the pandemic.
Our initial plan, originally unveiled in March, was structured with the #1
goal of keeping our employees safe during these unprecedented times and
resuming our business operations at the appropriate time (approved by state
and local governments).

No one could have ever anticipated that several of our markets would not
begin the first phase of the reopening process until June. As a result, we
must continue to adapt to the new financial environment we are facing
within each of our individual markets. We will be reducing performance
based bonus distributions for bonuses earned in Q3 and Q4, extending the
10% wage cut for salaried full-time employees and extending the 10%
reduction in hours for full-time hourly employees. These cuts will be
effective through December 31, 2020, respecting any outstanding contractual
obligations. In addition, the company will be extending furloughs until the
end of the year. Some employees may return sooner, based upon the needs of
the company on a market to market basis. I will also personally continue to
forego 20% of my compensation until the end of the year.

As a family-owned company that has served the community for nearly 60 years
and cares about its employees, decisions like these are never easy. We are
very grateful for your continued support.

As history has proven time and time again, when challenges arise, one thing
is certain… we, as individuals and as a nation, remain resilient.

Our communities count on us to be there for them and serve as a voice for
the voiceless. Please remember that what you do matters.

Better days will be ahead. Thank you for all you do.

May 2020 (4/23 - 5/20) Nielsen Audio PPM Ratings Day 2: WFLZ Surges After
Morning Show Change

Posted: 09 Jun 2020 02:00 PM PDT
https://radioinsight.com/headlines/188875/may-2020-4-23-5-20-nielsen-audio-ppm-ratings-day-2-wflz-surges-after-morning-show-change/

Nielsen Audio has released Day 2 of its monthly four day sweep of ratings
in PPM markets.

Todays releases include Washington DC, Boston, Miami, Seattle, Detroit,
Phoenix, Minneapolis, San Diego, Tampa/St. Petersburg, Denver, Baltimore,
and St. Louis.

All the numbers can be found at RadioInsight.com/Ratings.

The morning show change at two of iHeartMedias CHRs seemed to pay immediate
dividends. 93.3 WFLZ Tampa rose to a 4.3 after two months at a 3.1 after
the exit of Kane. The 4.3 share allowed WFLZ to pull back in front of Cox
Media Groups competing Hot 101.5 WPOI (4.0 to 4.1) while waiting for this
months debut of TheJoeShow in mornings.

Moving from Kane to Your Morning Show helped Hot 99.5 WIHT Washington DC
rebound to its March listening share as WIHT trended 3.7 2.7 3.6. The
third former Kane affiliate, CHR Z104.3 WZFT Baltimore dropped 2.2 to 1.9.

The continued growth of 90.3 KEXP Seattle is the other big story as it
trends 1.0 2.2 2.5. Other AAAs seemed to have been helped by the pandemic
as iHeartMedias 97.3 KBCO Denver has trended 3.6 4.8 4.8 and Minnesota
Public Radios 89.3 The Current KCMP Minneapolis went 2.6 4.3 4.9.

Elsewhere in DC, Cumulus Conservative Talk 105.9 WMAL-FM led the market
again despite dropping 10.0 to 9.3. Hubbard News 103.5 WTOP rose 7.7 to 8.0
to move back to second, while Public News/Talk 88.5 WAMU slid 8.4 to 7.4.
Despite only reaching the western fringes of the Washington market, Manning
Media Classic Hits 106.9 The Eagle WWEG Myersville MD has seen its shares
in the Washington market double since quietly adding market stalwart Jack
Diamond for mornings in early April. WWEG has gone 0.7 1.5 1.4 since the
addition of Diamond.

In its final monthly as CHR 103.3 Amp Radio WODS Boston went out with a
slight 1.0 to 1.1 gain. iHeartMedia Classic Rock 100.7 WZLX led the market
with a 7.5 to 7.6 gain and co-owned CHR Kiss 108 WXKS-FM placed second with
a 7.3 to 7.5 rise. Showing big gains in Boston were Beasley Country 102.5
WKLB with a 3.9 to 5.6 surge and Public News/Talk 89.7 WGBH-FM from 3.8 to
4.6.

Cox Media Group Adult RB Hot 105 WHQT Miami rises 6.6 to 7.5 to move up to
first with co-owned Soft AC Easy 93.1 WFEZ goes 6.4 to 7.5. SBSs duo of
Spanish AC Amor 107.5 WAMR (7.1 to 6.2) and Salsa Z92 WCMQ (5.8 to 6.2)
tied for third.

Ahead of last weeks relaunch, Cox CHR Hits 97.3 WFLC rose 2.8 to 3.0 while
its competitors saw similar gains with iHeartMedias Y100 WHYI rising 2.3 to
2.5 and Entercoms Power 96 WPOW-FM up 1.9 to 2.2.

Bonneville News/Talk 97.3 KIRO-FM Seattle leads with a 6.9 to 7.2 gain with
iHeartMedia Classic Rock 102.5 KZOK rising 6.1 to 6.6 behind it. Hubbard
CHR Movin 92.5 KQMV hasnt been hurt by the departure of morning co-host
Jubal Fresh as it has trended 5.4 5.8 6.2 over the past three monthlys.

Country was the big winner in Detroit this month as Entercoms 99.5 WYCD
rose 3.7 to 4.4 and the rebranding continues to pay dividends for Cumulus
New Country 93.1 WDRQ with a three month 2.6 to 3.0 to 3.9 trend.

Other than WIP Philadelphia, no other Sports station has thrived during the
