The SEA and Midland LMR 220Mhz repeaters & radios are now appearing on the
surplus market, pulled from the (now bankrupt) narrow band trunking
systems.
Securecor and Intek were large 220 smr operators in the late 90's. They
had systems out here on on the US West Coast from Texas to Alaska.
They are hybrid ACSB units, the LMR and SEA formats do not work with the
other.
SEA is still on line selling repeaters, however they probably wont do a
lot to help you convert the equipment to Amateur Operation.
Two Surplus Dealers are selling used ACSB radios and some repeaters, look
for them using the Ebay IDs of erac and rhoadeseller (might be
rhodeseller).
I bought much/most of the 220 antenna combiner equipment as it is very
high quality (Sinclair, Decibel, Wacom & Telewave) gear, of which I'm
slowly parting out to get some of my money back. Watch for my auctions on
Ebay if you have interest in this sort of stuff.
You might be able to make some of the radios talk to each other on simplex
(direct), then figure a way to move them up onto the amateur band after
you get the programming right, but it's not a beginers task.
There are a few 220 smr system operators still in operation around the
country, you might do a reverse lookup on the fcc web page and contact
those people you can find for information.
