I phone patch connects a radio to the telephone system. that way, you
could talk on the phone via your radio.

In the US, they are legal, IF: the patch is manually connected, which
means you have to have someone at the base station flip the switch and
dial the number for you. You cannot simply touch tone activate it from
your radio. The base would monitor the conversation and theoretically
cut it if FCC regs were violated.

Range: Well, whatever range you would have to the base station.

The base would be connected to a device which would receive the audio
from the base and send this over the phone. Then the other party on the
phone's audio would be transmitted over the base station to the mobile unit.

The phone patch sounds like a very interesting use of a CB. Does anyone out
there know how much one costs and/or where you can get one? Thanks.

But remember one thing, the range. I live within 2 miles of philadelphia
and my range with all the other goobs talking on the cb is usually under 4
miles, maybye max of 2 miles. Wouldn't it be easier to stop by your house
and make the call from there/?

Good point. However, I live on a 200 acre farm in the southwest corner
of Pennsylvania, and I was thinking that it would be a good way to place and
take calls during a day of farm work. It would have much greater range than
a normal cordless phone. Also, around there, there isn't much congestion on
most of the channels, so it would be possible to use it around town. Does
anyone have any idea about the plausibility of this setup? I was just
wondering how much this would cost and where I could find one.

One thing to consider, especially for us city folks..anyone can listen
in on cb..so anything you say is public. Plus anyone can use your phone
patch, once they figure out the access code, its hello 1-900 numbers
or at least "Wow its 2am on Tuesday there? Its only Sunday here!"

Gee Whiz! Your point taken, but for such a time difference, they'd have to
be talking to somebody on the moon !!!

Ahh, but suppose you make a number thats so long distance that it cross
the international date line a couple of times? Then it would be sunday
here and 2am tuesday here.

Thats the kind of phone call where you get a little meter by the phone
and it shows your life savings disappearing in a matter of seconds.
(okay so Ross Perot can talk for a minute or so)
