Travis,
You can do a lot with a Cobra 148GTL. They're not high powered rigs but
they can get out there and modulate. I have one myself. Anyway, VR-10 is
your AM power output (dead key). I wouldn't set this for more than 2
watts, especially if you plan on ever driving an amp. A neat trick is to
replace your single mic gain control knob with a dual--just like the
volume/squelch control. That way you can vary your dead key output from
0-8 watts--a variable carrier control like the more expensive exports
have.
Vr-11 is your sideband ALC limiting control. Turn it all the way up by
using a PEP watt meter to check. R-131 is a resistor in a the AMC
circuit. Removal of this resistor will disable TR-24 or better yet, you
can remove TR-24 (a small, black three legged 2sc945 transistor)-- this is
the modulation limiter or "muffer." In my opinion the D-104 Minuteman II
is the best power mic for this rig (the one with the 7 volt
battery--larger mic element inside)... OR the D-104 (Silver Eagle/Night
Eagle) if you plan on running it as a base radio.
There are several "tune-up" adjustments to peak the unit out for maximum
audio response while keeping the harmonics to a minimum. Unfortunately I
haven't got the time right now to explain it all. I suggest you contact
CBC International, Inc. at P.O. Box 31500, Phoenix AZ 85046 and ask Lou
Franklin for a copy of his order form for the CB Tune Up and Modification
Reports.
