Steve, makes a pretty good box. (Pirate) However I think Dave has the better
box. But if you want a real box call 1-800-Sneaky-Pete.....

Dave Mades are sloppier built and usually scratched and nicked even when
brand new. he does use some innovative technology though. the Pirate
boxes are nicely constructed and well built using standard technology and
optimizing it for best performance. both perform excellently and are about
tied in performance. either will run very well, and it's up to the
individual vehicle and installation if you don't get good performance out
of either of these boxes. the major difference is in price, as the
Pirate's are more reasonable. the difference in who wins what and where is
that Dave is east coast and Steve aka Pirate is west coast. all of the
ohio boxes are pretty much the same, like real deal, sneaky pete, 2112,
etc. = below par. believe it or not, properly modified texas stars will
keep up with almost all of these amps mentioned even though they don't have
large enough output transformers and combiners. only under extreme
conditions will one of the others walk away from a good texas box. i'm
glad to see someone else pop up that is familiar with big boy toys even if
we don't agree. Sean aka Bigfoot

If you are talking about amps made by "Sonny Day" in Detroit;

Yes!

I agree that the Pirates work pretty well, they are a "constructed" amp.
Looks pretty consistent, however Dave controls the input better that is how
the amps are capable of running on 20-24 volts. I know Steve pretty well, in
fact ask Steve about 428's and he will know me. Steve builds good boxes,
larger transformers, larger combiners... they run pretty well.

However the Ohio boys are still winning the big classes. On larger amps the
big transformers, big combiners...really don't come into play. HoundDog
running a 96 pill (PacMan) literally killed Bam, and SkidRow in Memphis (not
even a buzz). If you notice none of the Dave guys run in any classes larger
than 16 pills.....strange isn't it......I wonder why?

Sonny builds pretty good boxes, however he is way too much in the "swing"
thing for me. I see very few of "his guys" running in contests. I beat one
of his sixteen pills with an 8. They run pretty good when you fix is output
turn ratio.

I'm glad to see some "non-MudDucks" in here, I was about to give up on the
'ole rec.radio.cb....

Ok guys. I have known Dave since we were kids and can say he is devoted to
his products.
If some of you have a wish list or constructive critisism for his amps
please advise and I will
relay the info. I understand there are complaints abt the "cosmetics" of
the smaller pill boxes
which I will relay but I believe most time and care is generated on
building the big tube units
for the sky or unlimited shootout class. These units are a sight to
behold. DaveMade amps
are winners in any class you decide to run. Just listen to them.
Later. Jim.

I'll make my previous statement clearer, I like Dave Mades. The cosmetics of
a box doesn't bother me, I just want the thing to work. Daves 3 pill, 5
pill, 6 pill and 16 pill I know work from experience. Just though I would
"clear" the air.

Just look at how Gun does in the contests, it speaks for itself......(damn
that almost sounded like an advertisement)

Tell Dave I want a kick back.....

The only AC box of Dave's I've heard is 925, who else is running an AC box
from Dave ?

Alan,

Unit #123 out of Kankakee,Il. is running one. He also is an Employee of
Dave's. He goes out east for a few months then cames back home for a few
weeks, etc.....
Unit 123 has total access to Dave and builds equipment for him so when
#123 built the unit for himself I suspect that it was supposed to be a
showpiece.
He is not getting his name called any better then folks in his area
using dx1600's.

#123 did very well in the last round of DC (not AC) keydowns in this
area. But #123 has always had a reputation for overvolting and
overdriving by so much that he had a behind the scenes nickname of 'Go
or Blow'.
(Which is a term borrowed from the old days of the street racers when
they used to really increase the percentage of Nitrous Oxide for their
last race.)
When he was building his own stuff, he had a reputation for having a
50-50 chance of blowing up every time he keyed down. Since he has been
working for Dave he is doing much better, more like 25-75......

Also,

If Dave's AC boxes were doing so well, your question would not have had
to have been asked, because you would be hearing those folks talking
from all over the country.

As far as Dave Made 'cosmetics' are concerned, I think the cases and
chassis boxes are as good as the best in the industry. That means he has
a good chassis supplier. I am disappointed by the quality of the
circuit boards and assembly as compared to what I saw 2 years ago when I
promoted Daves product to the CB dealers in this area. I also consider
the cooling of his new model 40 and 80 'modulators' to be perfect
examples of incredibly stupid engineering!

A former "Dave-Made" fan,

Whoops, almost forgot..... Ya gotta love the Messengers. When Cat Dillon
was the "Big Man"on was the "Big Man" on the west coast, he took the
shootout at the Golden Eagle break with a Uniden Grant, Messenger Comp.
Modulator, and a Messenger 2K. That up against anything else! Granted, not
a whole lot of stuff bigger then, but I also witnessed him taking out a
3CX3000 mobile. So, like it was stated,..... You pay for the quality, and
long live MESSENGER (they where better when they where built in San Diego,
though. Many of the TJ Border Controllers ran the old messengers, and I
will always be partial).

Hi Toll,
AFAIK the 'original' messengers were built by Sam Lewis and his crew up
in Seattle. His company was RF Ltd and is now RF Ltd/Clear Channel. He
was busted after the NV do so I believe after reading Sean's previous
posting of who got done.
Sam was an aquaintance of mine a million years back.
His biggest amp was a 16-pill 2879 unit rated at 2kw, sold trade at
around 1100 bucks back in the early 90's. I still have an original
brochure. He had/has one of the better design engineers in the business
on the west coast.
They are coming out with a new range of amp's built in Taiwan early next
year although they do presently have some 2 and 4 pill units.

Regards

My biggest complaint with Dave Made's (I own 2), is that they're class C
amps. I had to design my own bias circuit into it so that I could use
it on SSB. Now that it's running as a class AB, and with the proper
drive, you can't tell that it's on.

If you know anything about davemades they are made for competition
not ssb talking . If you wanna talk ssb get a texas star or someother
Junk. Also to modify it for ssb you only have to make another keying
circuit with a relay not make it class ab , they are optimized for am
and a specific freq range

things are changing around here (chicago). it has been primarily a Real
Deal town for some time, but more and more Dave Made's are showing up. a
few Pirates are floating around, but not that many. the most current
pirate convert is a 16 pill / one alternator that just kicked a 24 pill
real deal box / multiple alternator setup (it had won the 24 pill class
here in chicago not even two months ago). pac man's boxes look like
abortions from what i have seen, even though he is a pretty good guy in

I have an M-80 and an M-200. Proper drive on AM is a power level that
will give a carrier output that is 1/4 of the full power output, so to
allow full 100% modulation.
