Well comparing the Cobra 2000 to the 142GTL - is like comparing Apples
to Oranges, they're both fruit (radios).
The Cobra 2000 has a few extras, like the clock, freq counter, and in
some cases, the MB8719 - otherwise you'll get the MB8754 PLL chip
instead.
Not a big deal for some.
The 142GTL is a lot like the larger footprint brother, only in a
smaller case style and lacks the clock/freq counter with extension
speaker combo.
The other drawback is a smaller power supply in the 142. It is
perfectly capable of handling the current-munching needs of the stock
version, and the larger variety of audio and channel mods that are
popular with the mobile 148GTL.
As far as boards? Quite similar, although layouts are slightly
different. The 142GTL is a lot like the 148 - the 2000 has a few extra
beefier parts that they didn't put in the 142GTL.
Once again, not a big deal for many people.
As far as comparison? You'll do fine with the 142 - the larger brother
has a certain "Vintage Collectors Item" aire about it. But you also
pay a higher price for a similar radio that nearly has all the same
parts as the smaller brother.
Granted the case designs are different - but the overall boards are
almost identical. Some changes to the power supply feed, and the AM
regulator sections between the two, but little else, except for the
added console space taken up by the clock/freq counter and the
external speaker.
The original manual, and schematic, will top-off the deal at $150.00
but no more than that.
Pretty good deal I'd say. But try it out first, even on stock parts,
have someone with SSB capable radios listen to you talk on it first.
Any signs of warble or shift/drift while QSO-ing on it may be a sign
of a weak power supply or poor filter/regulator. Scratchy sounds while
adjusting mic gain during TX, or volume while RXing, or erratic
Voicelock sounds while attempting to clarify in someone may indicate
some dust or dirt, or something more serious. Listen and work the
radio while you operate SWR/SWR Cal, Mod, NB/ANL switches. All should
work well if it's "right out of the box" as they claim.
