There is a local guy around me, that collects vintage radio equipment..... He
has it all... I asked him if he would consider selling one of his radios, and
he told me about this Cobra 142 base. He says he has the original box, with all
packing materials, along with the owners manual. He says it hasn't been out of
the box for about 5 years, and has never been opened up (peaked). He says he
talked on it for about an hour( total ), since it was bought.... He says he
will sell it to me for $150.00. How good is this radio?? does it compare, at
all, with the 2000 base??
Just wondering if this is a good deal, or not....... Thanks

Maniac.

It doesn't really compare to a 2000 as that radio just did things a little
differently. In the 142 , you are for the most part talking about a 148 in a
big package.

Greetings!

Well comparing the Cobra 2000 to the 142GTL - is like comparing Apples
to Oranges, they're both fruit (radios).

The Cobra 2000 has a few extras, like the clock, freq counter, and in
some cases, the MB8719 - otherwise you'll get the MB8754 PLL chip
instead.

Not a big deal for some.

The 142GTL is a lot like the larger footprint brother, only in a
smaller case style and lacks the clock/freq counter with extension
speaker combo.

The other drawback is a smaller power supply in the 142. It is
perfectly capable of handling the current-munching needs of the stock
version, and the larger variety of audio and channel mods that are
popular with the mobile 148GTL.

As far as boards? Quite similar, although layouts are slightly
different. The 142GTL is a lot like the 148 - the 2000 has a few extra
beefier parts that they didn't put in the 142GTL.

Once again, not a big deal for many people.

As far as comparison? You'll do fine with the 142 - the larger brother
has a certain "Vintage Collectors Item" aire about it. But you also
pay a higher price for a similar radio that nearly has all the same
parts as the smaller brother.

Granted the case designs are different - but the overall boards are
almost identical. Some changes to the power supply feed, and the AM
regulator sections between the two, but little else, except for the
added console space taken up by the clock/freq counter and the
external speaker.

The original manual, and schematic, will top-off the deal at $150.00
but no more than that.

Pretty good deal I'd say. But try it out first, even on stock parts,
have someone with SSB capable radios listen to you talk on it first.
Any signs of warble or shift/drift while QSO-ing on it may be a sign
of a weak power supply or poor filter/regulator. Scratchy sounds while
adjusting mic gain during TX, or volume while RXing, or erratic
Voicelock sounds while attempting to clarify in someone may indicate
some dust or dirt, or something more serious. Listen and work the
radio while you operate SWR/SWR Cal, Mod, NB/ANL switches. All should
work well if it's "right out of the box" as they claim.

Seems like all of you left out (to me) the most important part. You
can compare the Uniden Washington (which is still made & sells for about
$190.00 new) to the Cobra 142GTL because they are the same radio on the
inside. The receiver is different in the Cobra 2000GTL, the Uniden Madison &
the 148GTL. The Washington & the 142GTL are a single conversion radio & the
receive is cleaner in a dual conversion type. I have found that the noise
filters in the dual conversion type work a little better too. I say this
only because this is also a reason there is a price difference in the radios
that you are comparing. Some look for features & some for performance. All
in all, $150.00 for a collector quality radio ( in the condition stated)
these days is a good deal! Just for FYI; I also believe that the cobra 2000
came with a MB8734 chip from the factory...

Actually, if I remember right, the 148/Grant and 2000 shared the dual
conversion setup, the 142 is a single conversion board and is the equivalent
of the Washington and some of the other 8719 boards.

Forgot to throw this in,the 142 is a nice radio,I think with a little
shopping you could find one,or a washington, etc., for a bit less, the Web
prices are stiff but $100 should be enough to get you a good 142 or similar
radio.

Bill.........I ONLY go into specifics in e-mail when discussing radios.
There are plenty of people out there to give erronious info to the group at
large. After many years in this group you learn to keep it general to the
group and get specific with direct questions answered in mail.

THANK YOU G SEVEN *SIGH*
I have been getting really pissed off at all these morons saying " Oh yeah
this is cool I got me a new 2000 and it is so much better than anything you
have, even better than my 148" or whatever. Are they stupid? The
148,142,2000 are virtually the same radios, all great and all the same
PERIOD
So to all you ignorant babies that suck on a golden screw driver rather than
a pacifier. Maybe you should do some research some time

I agree but at the same time the one he is speaking of is MINT and if that
is the case I would go for it for only 50 more for the security that no one
has pealed it back is good
