Some people say that this will cause the final to "burn-out" quicker. True,
but not true too. Reason being is everyone has this thing about
"Dial-A-Watt" variables. I see it as useless. When the carrier is turned
up and down and so on and so forth, the transistor is weakend because of
constant change in current flow. Where as my radios are set at 4 watts and
have performed flawlessly since '91. Plus, the audio is clean and crisp
because of the "fidelity" of its stock mic. There is no need for a Power
Mic to be used after this MOD is done.
This has not been a SECRET. Any good tech will tell you about this mod.
But then theres those who seen these mods done and seen the burned one's
come across their benches with this mod done to it. I've yet to see mine go
back to the bench. This is whats left of my two cents and then some.

Any truly good tech wouldn't dare do a "swing" modification to this, or any
other, radio any moreso than a good mechanic wouldn't put Slick50 into an
engine.

Besides, I don't use Slick50. But everybody has their own opinion.

works great with linears, and causes no harm to the radio. You end up with
variable power on the SWR CAL knob, but don't loose the function of the SWR
bridge.
remove the VR adjustment for Am power.
remove the wires from the SWR _CAL, and tie the CAL circuit to where it is
wide open.
wire the SWR-CAL pot in place of the AM power adjustment.
This will give you variable wattage. the more you turn the control down, the
better it will swing. this WILL NOT give any more power though,But it's
handy if you run a amp. the SWR will still calibrate since the circuit is
still hooked up, the variable wattage will reach a point to still calibrate
the meter. Ideally, this should work with any SSB radio.
