If you were around here, I'd fire up the Regency Range Gain.

Wow! My kind of CBing! I sure wish there were a group of people, in my
area, who would start a "retro-revival". I have several oldies but
goodies. I have a Lafayette Comstat 25 (My original base), a Comstat
25A, as well as several other solid state (and one hybrid) radios that
are over 25 years old (Antique in car terms).
It makes sense though. Many of us, who grew up with CB as teenagers, are
going through that mid-life "crisis" where we wax reminiscent about the
things we did, and miss about our youth. This puts us in the 40-50 year
old range, which falls into the time of greatest growth of CB, from
1968-1978.
Break out the lava lamps, black lights, Peter Max posters, pop in an
8-track tape, and enjoy the sounds of an old tube type CB!

Sure thing! Besides, most of those old tube rigs could be pumped up
considerably beyond legal limits!

That depends. Some models utilized tubes that had a much higher plate
dissipation than the circuits they were used in called for, and with
some playing around with plate voltages you could net quite a few more
watts. But then you had to boost the modulator stage, to keep up with
the increase in carrier power, and once you were done, it was usually
less reliable then it originally was. I have vivid memories of some of
those "hopped up" tube rigs running cherry red plates. Luckily, back
then, Radio Shack had lifetime free replacement tube guarantees.
Tube circuitry had similar limitations as transistors. They just worked
a little differently. Sometimes you could just "swap" out one tube for
another and gain a little, but there was no real "magic" involved. It's
just easier to pull out a tube from a socket, then it was to unsolder a
transistor.

It also had a wide receiver front end you could drive a car through... ie
not much selectivity. Most of those older format CB's were similar... but
when there were 10 people in the entire town on CB, t'was not a problem.
Time for a cheap plug for the siltronix web page...
