Recently someone posted saying that the Wilson 1000 has 58% more gain
than the K-40. How accurate is this figure? I plan on buying one of
these two antennas in the next week and the Wilson will cost me only
$10 more than the K-40 and would be well worth it for a 58% gain over
the K-40. I have heard however that if your whip on the Wilson breaks
they don't sell a replacement whip where with the K-40 a replacement
costs about $20.

Any input would be appreciated.

The Wilson 1000 will give you 58% more gain (look at the specs on the box).
As for the replacement whip. I have bent my whip 2 times and each time I was
able to get a replacement whip from a CB shop for approx. $10.

My local CB shop has loads of the Wilson 1000 whip sections...

Good luck.

That's ALL it is: MUD DUCK GOSSIP. Compared to a WIlson, all a K40 is good
for is a rod to roast marshmallows.

Very unscientific, but I would rather trust user reviews than the
manufacturers.

My local shop doesn't carry Wilsons, and is trying to give me a Formula 1
but as (Antenna Specialists) a 65" mag mount for $57.90 they say that AS was
the first maker by which everyone bases theirs on, and is truely the best...

Any comments

Woody-
Replacement whips are fairly common in CB shops ( I always order a couple
extra for those who over cut their wilson whip...nice to have on hand). The
loaded whip seems to be pretty good (doesn't really help get my van in a
parking garage) but I'm going to leave it on there for awhile to test a little
longer...

As far as i know they do sell replacement whips for wilson's. i
myself have bought one for mine. And in my personal opinion Wilsons are
worth the ten dollors more. I've had mine for two years now and it beats
the hell out of my old K-40.

Doesn't seem to be any difference that I can tell so far. MOst of the guys
that I talk to say the signal is about the same.

Woody,

Good to hear someone else is using the loaded whip. Any estimate on

how much the loaded whip's performance will be reduced over the full

length whip. I hope it douesn't cut down on the performance much. Thanks

I used to work for a CB dealer in the Seattle area, and we carried
both K-40 and Wilson, but dropped the K-40 after not selling a single
one in over 9 months (couldn't keep Wilsons in stock fast enough for
demand). They are both good performers, but the Wilson has a few BIG
advantages : better signal (inand out) and they thread on (K-40's
bayonett mount tends to fail if used more than a few times causing
your load and whip to fall off the mount). Ant REPUTABLE Wilson dealer
carries any/all the spare parts you can use. We sold the spare whips
for $9.95 for Wilson, $16.95 for K-40. (I've seen quite a few Wilson
whips get bent, but never seen a broken one. The bent one's took quite
a bit to get that way)

BTW, I had a 4ft Firestik top loaded 5/8wave hard mounted in the
center of the roof on my pick-up truck... replaced it with the
Wilson-1000 and got a better than 2 S-unit gain (sending and
receiving) over the Firestik. That's like having 100 watts with the
Firestik, and perfectly legal.

No damage, just a lot of noise.

Furthermore, we were able to talk over a distance of 150km of flat
land, a few little cities, using only 3 (!) Watts.

And besides, the Wilson 1000 looks pretty cool too!

I've seen this figure before and personally think it's a farce. I've
done side by side tests with the Wilson 1000, K40 and Antenna Specialists
Formula 1 antennas and could literally not tell any difference between
the three over a 45 miles test in an identical situation.

The advantage of the Wilson is certainly that they are popular (mostly
because of advertising) and parts will be relatively easy to get. But
for the money in my opinion the AS Formula 1 is the best deal.
