They were made in the middle 70's by B&K Precision. They're
not in production any more. The one you're looking for is the
model 1040. I have one that I don't use anymore; I'd probably
sell it if the price was right. It's condition is a about an
8 on a 1 to 10 scale, and I have the book that goes with it.
Try rec.radio.swap and any other radio swap groups you can think
of first because you'll have to pay big to get mine. I have the
full set; the 1040 and the 2040. I don't need the money, and I'd
just as soon keep them as collector's items. If you can't find
one anywhere else e-mail me and we'll talk about it.
Good luck.

How much Bill
Brass at Muddy Waters Radio
Too much. I told one person via e-mail what it would take to make
me let go of 'em and he was shocked. I told him to sit down and
hold on to something sturdy before he looked at the number, but he
said the number was so high it knocked him out of his chair anyway.
:-)
I won't post the number to the newsgroup, but if you really want to
know just e-mail me. Here's a hint: He wanted the full set and I
told him that for what I want he could be well on his way toward a
real service monitor.
As for the quality of the 1040 and the 2040; they're just service
grade test equipment--they're nothing special except for the fact
that they were made specifically for servicing CB radios back in
CB's heyday. I only keep them for the sake of nostalgia. The
real servicing gets done with H/P, Tektronics, and IFR equipment.
I'd recommend the same to any other place that's looking to im-
prove their reputation as a hardcore CB shop. If you have to
really use the 1040 and the 2040 to make a living, be sure to have
them checked out and calibrated thoroughly by a qualified test
equipment calibration facility. Don't be surprised when they tell
you your stuff is old and crappy and that it isn't accurate and it
won't hold a calibration for very long. The bottom line is that
service grade test equipment from the 70's just isn't that good.
I like to look at 'em and show 'em to customers but that's it. I'm
happy because my 1040 and 2040 work, but to make a living these
days you need at least an old Motorolla or IFR service monitor.
The 1040 and 2040 are old, tired, outdated service quality stuff
that was never meant to last this long. Any shop in their right
mind wouldn't go after the B&K stuff if they really want to make a
living at this. This isn't meant as an insult, it's just meant
to remind people that it's 1997, not 1977.
Good luck.
