There has been a lot of Radio Shack bashing out there and I have been
part of it, but in the interest of fairness everybody should know that Radio
Shack does not build all, if any, of their CB radios. I hear people on the
air, who run Unidens and Cobras, talking down to those who have Radio
Shack CBs. I have a Realistic TRC-465 which is made by Uniden. It is
a Uniden PC-122 clone. There are two radios in the RS catalog, TRC-444 and
TRC-443 Classic Series which strangely resemble the Cobra Classic radios.
Anybody out there want to bet good money that Cobra DIDN'T make
these radios for RS? Some of the other radios are made by Maxon, which
I don't think is the greatest brand to begin with, but the point is before
you bash a Radio Shack CB, make sure that the one you are talking on
is not the Cobra, Uniden or Maxon equivalent!!!

The Radio SHack Radios, Known as their Classic Series are made by Maxxon.
These are fine, cheap Radios. In truth the TRC-444 and little brother
TRC-443 are 95% the same radio. Only a few added functions and a bigger
chassis for the TRC-444. I have seen these units in Factory repackaged
models sell for $35 and $45 respectively. If you have a amplified mic
to stick in there and clip D-401, these babies really talk. One thing
to remember with any of the newer models is, No way to get Extra Channels.

You can mod these for up/down buttons on the Mic. But it is a
problem as you need to change the 4 pin chassis plug to a 6 pin, and
that is a bit of work. Kinda nice though. Their receivers are not to bad,
and they both have one of the best noise blankers I have heard.

All in all Radio Shack Radios are OK, some are better than others.
Look for a Radio Shack OUTLET store. I have two near me and they
sell the factory repackage units. Very Good values for the money.

actually you would have to look pretty hard to find a cb NOT made by
uniden, in fact, i can't think of one made today that is not made by
uniden. you might be surprised!

This is exactly true. Just as with other consumer electronic equipment,
like shelf stereos, boom boxes, TVs, VCRs, et al. they are usually made by
one manufacturer and other companies buy the rights to put their names on
them and distribute them. Sony, JVC, Panasonic, and other big electronic
companies sell their "blank" products to Emerson, GoldStar, and others,
who put their names on the product and resell them. It is no different
with CB radios. The difference is in the service you get, which is what
the root of the Radio Shack bashing stems from. For all the newcomers out
there, purchase your radios from actual MANUFACTURERS like Cobra or
Uniden, where you'll get the royal treatment when it comes to service.
Since Radio Shack did not actually MAKE the radios, they are, essentially,
clueless. Radio Shack is biased towards sales, which is why their
salespeople get commissions. If you don't purchase the extended warranty
when you buy stuff (which is another SALE), you get the shaft when the
thing breaks.
