I just picked up the (not-so) new Heil hand mic and am in the process
of wiring it for the Uniden Grant XL. Of particular note is that this
mic (as are all Heils) is NOT amplified. It comes with a "Full Range"
and the HC-4 "DX" elements with a small slide switch on the back to
select the "audio" that suits you (or the prevailing conditions) best.
I personally am interested in hearing the audio reports on the CB with
a Heil mic. I use a Heil mic with the FT-840 and most ARO's seem to
love the audio. It's not loud, but it's crystal CLEAR.
I did go through the "voice of God" phase during the early 80's. I'd
heard an op that was using an AR-3500 with an amplified D-104 and it's
actually hard to describe how loud and clear that audio was. There
were also guys with 2000 GTL's and Madisons that had booming audio
when coupled with the D-104s and Turners of the day. I had a D-104
that could "hear" a mouse pee on cotton...downstairs! Eventually, it
became difficult to listen to one of these guys during a rag-chewing
session because when you set your speaker volume level to accomodate
the rest of the folks at the round table, these guys would come in a
break your eardrums. (But they were ALWAYS the first station called by
a DX op cutting into the session.)
So I'll give the non-amplified Heil a shot. The Uniden already has
excellent audio and I'm interested to see how the Heil sounds with the
speech processor on as well. I'll update you guys (& gals) as soon as
I have some substantive data.

Bert,
Personally, I think you have the two worst mic-elements
that Heil offers. The 'Gold' or wide element is much too
wide for normal use, and the HC-4 is just the opposite,
much too 'narrow'. Too bad you didn't get the HC-5.
'Doc
What's up Doc, (Sorry, couldn't resist. Sorta like "Hey Bert!")
No worries, the HC-4/5 standard studio mic's in the inventory too. I do kinda
like the Goldline's sound though. (The rag-chewer in me, I guess?) Take it
easy. :-)

Whats that Tim, You don't like the sound of Hi-Fi SSB, you prefer
distortion?
Pa_Power,
"Hi-Fi SSB" is sort of like 'military intelligence',
an oxymoron.

As a follow-up, I ran into something interesting. After exchanging a
couple of e-mails with Bob Heil, a minor issue came to light. CB
radios employ a DPDT switching circuit that disconnects the speaker in
addition to grounding the PTT line and connecting the microphone. BTW,
this is why the "unplugged mic" defense doesn't fly with the FCC when
you tell them that you're just "monitoring" your modified CB radio and
have no xmit capability. Mo mic, no sound. See below for the mic
wiring diagrams.

Standard wiring:

So I'm wiring the mic to the President Lincoln instead, for the time
being. The two radios have similar audio characteristics so I'll use
that as a preliminary benchmark. Meanwhile, it shouldn't be too
difficult to get the mic to work with the Grant's Pin3/Pin4
arrangement. Take care now.
