I was just wondering what would be the best antenna to use for a 10/11 meter
mobile radio?...I will be mounting it in the center of my truckbox which
isn't very strong so would a dome mount be suitable also?....How well does a
k-40 work for this purpose and is it easy to tune without having to cut the
whip? Thanks, Jack

I just installed a Wison 5000 roof mount on my truck tool box. It works great,
the tool box makes a great ground plane. I would guess that the K40 would also
work well.

The K-40 would work well for you. Another good antenna to consider if you are
going to hard mount it to the box is a Solarcon. The Wilson series antenni can
be hard mounted as well. I have had excellent results with my solarcon antenna
and a Wilson 2000 that I have used in the past

I was told that the "Modulator" antenna is the best wideband mobile
antenna there is so I went and got one. It's about 7ft tall and has two
coils. I haven't tried it out yet but will when I get back in a week.
Full report to follow.....

I have had and still use the RF limited Super Penatrator. Never had a problem
wideband width too. about 1.5 i think holds 2500 watts which is plenth 5/8th
wave. I usually only talk ssb and it shoots good skip. I talk out of the US all
the time Austrailia last week on 38lsb.

The light weight all aluminum antenna also is a good contender. My
customers can now hear things they never heard before.(no wise cracks
please) Also a good seller. Regards, John, Big Blue, Acorn Ridge

Hi,
I have used a K40 for 11meters and 10meters
but the only way it would match with out a matcher in line was to have
to coils and whips
which works ok because when the skip is in
if you have a Tech plus lic you put the short
coil whip on its about 3 inch shorter than the
11meter coil whip on mine. If you just want to
lessen just use the 11 meter coil whip it will
work ok you don't need much gain for skip
and when there is no skip 10 meters is dead
Also there is an Ant that is called a screwdriver
that will match from 10 to 40 meters that Hams
use when talking skip that is electrialy operated
but its priceeeeeeee.

A Wilson antenna or a Network 55 would be great choices.

oops! We mentioned a great aluminum antenna in a previous post and forgot
to name it. It is a "Nugatron" antenna for mobile use. Can be mounted on
a bee hive, mirror mount, or ball mount. Sorry for th omission. Big Blue.

102" whip, Hustler SSM-1 ball mount and spring. It doesn't get any better than
this.

Thanks!.....right now I'm going to stick with 11 meter because I don't have a
license YET but hopefully if I can find some info I will soon....I'm buying a
northstar 3000 and since it's a 10 meter radio in the future I will need an
antenna that will work with 10 meter.
Thanks,
Jack

Well after the mod is done on the radio for 11 meter then I'll be able to use
other frequencies in the 10 meter band......basically it's a 6 band radio but
not until it's motified....or atleast that's what I've been told...

The only mobile antenna I know of that will work 10 and 11 at the same
time is a 102" whip.
More importantly the Northstar is not a 10 meter radio, even with a lot
of modification it will not work 10 the way people today want to(split
trancieve,scan).It is not a 6 band radio.An RCI 2950 IS a great 10 meter
mobile with all the features and can do 11 as well(not legal).I think
they tout the northstar as a 10 meter to fool the feds and sell an
otherwise illeagal CB.
Good luck on the license.AB7RS

I use a Wilson 1000 mag mount, but I had to trim off 3 inches to make
the SWR on 10 meters 1.3:1. Without using a tuner or two antennas and a
coax switch, I don't believe there is ONE antenna that can do both
without damaging your radio.

Hi
Heres a way you can use one antenna K40,
Wilson ect first get a coax T then get around
9 ft of coax the small stuff and a 3ft jumper
hook the 3ft jumper to the radio ,2950 is best
hook the T to the other end hook the antenna
to the throw end of the T Now take the 9ft piece
with a connector on one end to the leg of the T
then use diagonal pliers and put the 2950 on
SWR and use the pliers to short the end of the
9ft piece put the radio on 28400 and check swr
if swr is high start moving down the the 9ft piece 1 inch at a time till
swr is acceptable
then check swr on cb band 27405 if it is ok
then solder the last place you shorted the stub
and put some tape on it. You have created
a resonite circuit for 10 meters. It should be
more broad banded than the antenna in stock
form. If SWR is still high on 27405 , just
disconnect the stub and it will be very exceptable on the CB band. Make
sure the antenna was matched on the CB band before you start
this endevor. 73's

Have been watching this thread for awhile and decided to add my 2cts.
I was perfectly happy using a SuperStar 3000 and Wilson 1000 mag-mount on '86
Volvo Turbo Wagon until someone stole the SS3000. Being faced with a long-trip
and no radio or time to find a good one I decided to try Cobra 25ST. Extremely
un-impressed! Dumped it and borrowed my nephew's old 29LTD which was an
improvement! Decide to buy Pres. JFK because I wanted Inst. CH 19 SW as I was
running it against hump behind drivers seat. (Not much room in front to mount)
JFK worked fine after I had a decent CB shop align it. (Glen Travel Plaza, Exit
28, NY Thruway) Decided I wanted a SSB radio. After watching this newsgroup and
looking at various things in truckstop CB shops and talking to bills2way (among
others) I decided on the Pres. George (PCB made by Uniden). The only place I
could find one was Thomas Dist. It was several months before I could get one as
the supply was apparently limited. When I finally got it (already converted to
11m) it worked fine on SSB but didn't have the AM punch of the JFK. Sent it to
C&C Electronics in IL. and had them set it up. Much better after that! I think
they brought the AM deadkey up to 10W from 4. Now seems to outtalk the JFK.
In the process of going SSB found out my vehicle radiates massive amounts of
electrical noise. Changing to a Wilson 5000 cut back some of it. MTI/LMR
filters on the fuel pump/gauge leads and ignition coil cut a lot more. In the
quest for more performance I direct wired radio to battery and mounted antenna
through roof for better grounding and groundplane! After talking to C&C
Electronics and President Dist. in IL I decided to try Pres. Pennsylvania
antenna. It's the best thing I've used so far, on local contacts most people
see about 1 S unit improvement over 5000. On DX contacts with Saskatchewan and
England (from Central NY) with fairly stable conditions both operators said I
was distinctly louder with Pennsylvania. It fits the Wilson Mt. fine. It's
extremely easy to set SWR via setscrew and plunger arrangement. Being of French
design it's not without peculiarities. The coupling link at the top of the
loading coil can loosen up causing degradation of performance. Being a 7/8 wave
design it's about 18 in. longer than the Wilson and doesn't take kindly to
being banged into garage ceilings, etc. It's extremely broad-banded (2.5 Mhz ,
is their claim!)
Am now using it with a Kenwood TS-50 (a better SSB radio than the George, but
not as good on AM!) with good results.
Here's a link to Pres. Penn. Ant. Website

Thanks for your patience.

Thanks for that info....I'm buying a NS-3000 for now because my girlfriend's
dad has one and he's a truckdriver.....I'm going to be running it with a
Palomar 225, it's mainly so we can talk to him when he's out on the
road....he runs a tx-400 along with that northstar 3000 and he says he gets
good reports on it all the time....I'm sure it would be nothing for me to
talk to him and him to talk back to us because he mainly only travels to
elpaso and other places in texas. Sometimes he does run to New Mexico and
Missouri so those times will be harder to talk to him I'm sure but the point
I'm trying to make is whenever I have it all set up I need my swr to be 1.5:1
or less according to most people who tell you how to care for your amp. The
thing about his rig is that since he takes the radio and amp in and out of
the truck all the time I'm sure the SWR varies from time to time....I've told
him he needs to get a good swr meter and check it every once in a while but
he won't really listen to me....oh well though it's his amp and his partners
radio so if they fry them then they fry them.... Thanks, Jack
