EVERY transmitter has a built-in linear. What do you think the final
stage of your transmitter is?

There are the Ranger 29xx series I believe have a 2 pill installed from the
factory. I understand there is another brand that also has a 2 pill amp from
the factory but I cant rem the name.

I think it's the Ranger 6900F something.

The add-on 2 pill amplifier has problems with overheating and
RF feedback. You are much better off with separate units.

The Magnum 357 DX and RCI2970DX have built-in illegal linear amplifiers I
believe.

Twit! They are only illegal when used on 11 meters, in which case neither
radio comes from the factory with 11 meters enabled.

If it is an AM only rig, it is probably not a linear amplifier.

One thing is to be realized here first, even before we get started. No
matter what you buy, be it an amplified radio, or a seperate unit. You
will not be the biggest radio on the air. Troubleshoot your radio
system, to make sure it is as 'EFFICIENT', as it can be. You must
start with the antenna. The antenna is close to 75% of your system.
The biggest radio in the world won't get out on a bad antenna system.
Make sure you have NEWER coax cable (replace it every six months in a
big truck). For your application, a single 18' length of mini 8
(rg-8x),with hand-soldered 'amphenol' pl259 ends, will work perfect.(I
like the Grey stuff better, but its up to you. Next get yourself a
GOOD mount, preferrably with a stainless steel HD stud. What kind of
radio you have will determine what kind of antenna I will recommend.
If you plan to go the Ranger 2970 or Galaxy route, The Nugatron
LX1000, would be my #1 choice. I'm sure there are many who will
disagree, but this antenna CANNOT be matched for the price. The
recieve on this thing is unbelievable!! Very broadbanded too. It can
be seen at www.e-nug.com. Dennis is very good people. I have had a few
come back broken (from trees, or low bridges or doors. I even had one
broken by a barnowl rolling at 65mph!)I send them to Dennis, and he
either repairs it, or sends me a new one! Lifetime warranty! Good
product! If you slipseat, buy a 4 1/2' skipshooter.... Its the best
performing fiberglass antenna out there, and it looks just like the
one that came on the truck. (except for the tunable tip)... As for
tuning the antenna, I use an mfj259b swr analyzer, but I don't think
you will use it all that much, to go spend $225.00 on a meter. Look
for a good meter that is switchable between forward, and reflected
watts. These meters will also measure swr. I use swr as a 'ballpark'
figure, the lowest swr doesn't always mean the antenna is working at
its optimum efficiency. I always tune for lowest reflected watts. and
is usually about 1-2 points higher than lowest 'tuned' swr. For your
radio, I wouldn't really recommend the Ranger 2970 (built-in linear),
I would much rather have a Galaxy... with an external amplifier. Take
for example, a Galaxy 73V. Excellent radio, loaded with useful
features. This one is the only Galaxy mobile that has an internal swr
meter. You can see it here http://www.galaxyradios.com/73.html .. I
also recommend the Texas Star 350HDV amplifier That can be seen here:
http://www.texasstar.com/export/350vEX.gif the info and specs can be
seen here: http://www.texasstar.com/export/specifications.html ...A
350 is about as big as you can go, without having problems with your
electrical system. This amp will deadkey almost 200 watts, and peak
out around 375-400 watts (all the way up). This will squash the hell
out of a Ranger 2970. Even though it says it can take a big deadkey
for drive, i have found that with no more than 3 watts out of the
radio, you will sound very clean, but still doing very well on the
wattmeter. Don't forget a good Microphone... An Astatic 636L works
very well. Some like the Roadking 56, but I think it is too bassy for
my voice. The next thing you need is a external speaker..... I have
not used one that works as good as the Uniden ESP26. I have personally
had one for about 5 years without any problems.

Before buying your radio, find a reputable technician that you can
trust. The best technician near Chicago is at Real world Electronics,
in Monee, Illinois. The shop is about 20-25 miles south of Chicago, on
I-57 exit 335 (manhattan/monee road), in the Petro truckstop. The guys
name is Sean.
As far as I know, he doesn't do mail order..., So you will have to pay
him a visit. As for online CB merchandise: check out www.bigradio.biz
its a new site with many things you just can't find anywhere.....

"Very broadbanded too."

And if it is "very" broadbanded, it is also inefficient! The wider the
bandwidth, the sloppier
a radiator it is. An extremely efficient antenna is also NARROW-banded.
Unfortunately, you
can't have both. In the CB business, broadbandedness is sold as an
asset--especially to those
who like to "freeband". For those who use amps, they don't notice the loss
as much because
that and the other "loud n' proud" tricks somewhat mask the antenna's
inefficiency.

Take no offence to this, but after checking out the site, I'd say that any
place that has to advertise their products with a large-chested blonde
holding/standing next to it, is selling garbage... Granted this MAY be a
good antenna, but the marketing ploy says junk... I'd suggest loosing the
woman...

Hrm... Haven't I been saying that for two years now? Spend the time and
money on a good, efficient antenna system, and you'll "get out" better,
even with a barefoot radio.

What we really need to do is to take a look at the way that they advertise
items in other countries.
Yeah, man.
Get her on there with no top on and I`ll buy one !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ( I`m
not talking about the antenna either !!!! )

I`ll bet you don`t watch tv because they have girls on all of the
advertisements trying to sell things.
At least they make the advertisements more interesting.
Instead of losing the girl, put a few more on the site !!!!!!!!

Amen for good looking females !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This world would really suck without them.
