Nice answer Ken. Did you ever in your myopic mind consider this is all
he could afford or maybe even a gift, but who gives a shit how he came
about owning the radio, answer the question or shut the fuck up! Man
you are a dickhead!

I see Casey's being his usual kind, gentle, helpful, and polite self.
Giving all the CBers and others on the newsgroup such a positive
impression of ham radio operators as a result.
Hey Casey, what's this I hear about you playing with toy submarines in the
bathtub?

>Is there any mods for this little radio?
Once upon a time I had a 520XL, similar design. I don't know the PCB
locations, but you can pull the limiter (clip one leg) on the
modulation, and drop the dead key (2 1/2 to 3 watts) a bit to get
really strong audio. Don't try to push any extra wattage, and the
radio will serve well. Modulation will outperform carrier on a small
radio any day of the week. Use a brick if you really need power,
it'll drive it just perfectly. Also a decent external powered
speaker will do wonders for the "receive" .
You can also get the "a" channels by doing a 10kc mod by adding a
crystal and a switch. Again, I don't have the details.
Good luck!
I still don't see an answer from you. Do YOU own the 501XL, that's what
I thought. So, I state it once again, answer the question or shut the
fuck up! Do you get it this time? I didn't think so, oh yeah, your
opinion of the 501XL is just that, your opinion. I don't remember Mike
asking for your opinion. As for the mods, I admit I don't know them,
but then again, I didn't reply to his post, you did and I still don't
see any help for Mike.
Casey
I see Drew is putting his two cents worth in again and asking for
change. Drew, you know nothing of me, nor I you. I wish to keep it
that way, unless you push. What impression do you think people have of
you, since you make foolish and false statements in your post. I don't
"get" your toy submarine in the bathtub reference. Must be something
personal to you? Anyway, I care not to know. Take care, and have fun
down in Sunny Central Florida.

Kudos to you Casey, I used to own a PRO 501XL, and I liked it, its a
GREAT first radio. I also own a PRO 510XL, another great "first radio".
for reference i have the following.
caution: melt the wax or epoxy seal with soldering iron before trying to
turn cores
also make sure your alignment tool fits well in the slot or hex.
if you break that core, you won't be laughing...
these 5 radios use the same procedure
audio limiter cut D14
tune for max L6 and L5 (when tuning, tune for max audio swing
on meter. Not the highest deadkey)
if possible inject 600 hz tone into mike or say
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh while tuning for max swing.

Casey==take a couple Midol and SHUT THE FUCK UP. Trying to mod a 501XL
is like putting earrings on a hog, they might look nice, but its still a
hog. The VFO knob on most REAL radios is probably worth more than a
501XL. Nobody would waste their time trying to modify this little
thing.

I can agree with clipping the AMC limiting diode, but I would like to
know how much of the 9 watts is actually power output on the channel you
are tuned to and how much is spurious and harmonic output. Simply
peaking coils for maximum meter reading does not mean that the power is
all going into the channel on your display. You need to check this on a
spectrum analyzer.
Also, if you are indeed getting 9 watts output, (I assume you mean dead
key) what type of final does the radio have? I find it hard to believe
that they use a final hefty enough to allow for 9 watts dead key and
100%+ modulation in a bargain basement radio. Keep in mind that I am not
trying to flame you, I am honestly curious.
