Tuesday morning, WWWE-AM/1100 traffic reporter Jim Endsley ("Fred Wesley")
and pilot James MacVeigh were killed when MacVeigh's helicopter tagged a
Cellular One tower in Highland Hills, Ohio, and crashed. Endsely worked for
Metro Traffic and had been reporting traffic for 3WE for about eighteen months.
The crash occurred near the intersection of Harvard and Richmond Roads, about
a quarter-mile west of Interstate 271, about 15 miles southeast of downtown.

Apparently, MacVeigh's visibility was compromised when a blinding snowstorm
hit without warning. The National Transportation Safety Board's Jim Cain is
trying to determine whether MacVeigh tried to swich from visual to instrument
flying procedures when the storm hit.

Although not an employee of the radio station, many there consider him a part
of the team and will miss him greatly, as will others in Cleveland who have
worked with him.

I heard the reaction of the staff of WWWE to the death of the reporter &
pilot. It was quite superficial. The reason: the management of that
station decided that WWWE's traffic reporter(s) should just report the
traff ic and remain anonymous. So when the plane went down, there was a
"loss" albeit an unnamed one. The air staff reported the deaths, and it
seems sad that it this occurance was the first time we listeners learned
the identities of the traffic reporter (and pilot). Just goes to show
you that airstaff can be taken for granted. As a sidebar.....it should be
noted the "new" traffic reporters are EQUALLY anonymous!
Will they ever learn?

hmm.. the Plain Feeler actually quoted one or two of the 3WE staffers as
saying they would miss Endsley. I unfortunately did not get to hear any
soundbites on radio or TV news.

I listened to 3WE the day after the fatal crash. The morning news
program put together a nice tribute to Endsley, which included a lot of
bantering back and forth with Jeff and Flash. They praised his sense of
humour, and his personality on and off the air. It didn't sound
anonymous to me.

Here in Cincinnati, our traffic reporter (on WLW) is anything but
anonymous. He'll be listening to the news/talk before he gives his report,
and before he reports the traffic, he'll usually offer some comment on the
news. He's very insightful! He also does personal appearances, like, if he
lands his helicopter at a Hardee's where you're eating, you get a free
lunch. I'm glad our guy is _not_ anonymous....

Same here in Charlotte. The traffic reporters on all the stations have
become very much a part of the morning & afternoon shows that they are
featured on. My favorite is on Jefferson-Pilot's WBT AM 1110 and Sunny
107.9. Know what his name is? "JEFF PILOT!" Is that great or what?

Holly Copter (AKA Patty Harken, Patty Daniels), another Metro Traffic
reporter in Cleveland is anything but anonymous.
Heard on stations like WKNR and WNCX, she is almost like another air
personality. In fact, listeners have expressed strong opinions about her
(i.e. "Stop the cute crosstalk with the on-air jock, and get on with the
damn traffic already!)
