With (formally 980) Oldies 990, CKIS's call change change back to the
old CKGM, and a change to all talk, this got me to thinking...

What ever happened to morning man Ralph Lockwood?
He was awesome to listen to and many people near the border in Vermont
and New York did. I remember he left CKGM, then came back for short
awhile, but mostly I only saw him doing ads on TV for the BAR-B-Barn
rib joint.

For that matter, what about Robert G. Hall? I heard he left CKGM to go
work at a satellite music service (SMN?) but it was just a rumor.

The only other name that pops into my mind is Mark Dennis who went to
CJFM for a bit.

I got to hear Lockwood a couple of times when I was in Montreal in the
seventies and no question he was an outstanding morning man. Funny, topical,
and worked the phones well.
I once heard, and it may be purely legend but it does make a great story, that
Ralph decided one morning to call one of the star players of the Montreal
Alouettes football team to congratulate him on a great road game the night
before. Ralph, who knew all the players personally, knew where he was staying
and called the hotel LIVE...the phone in the hotel room was answered by a
female voice, not the guy's wife. The player's real wife was listening to the
show and was not at all amused. Anyone know if the story is true?

I worked with Ralph at WHLO in Akron/Canton in the 1960s just before his
move to Montreal. (An interesting story relating to an Ohio judge, a
divorce, and alimony payments that were literally more than he was making.)

I was travelling through York, Pennsylvania several years ago and saw a
billboard advertising Ralph on WSBA (owned by Susquehanna, which owned
WHLO in the '60s). I honestly don't know if it is the same man, but I
assumed it was. He was well-liked in the company.

Wow! There's a name from the History books of Montreal radio. I listened
to the birdman on CKGM when I kid and you guys have brought back a lot of
memories. I can't completely recall the name of the football player who
got the call in the hotel room but it sounded something like Mike Wiggen
or Wigget. Anyway the call did happen. Ralph returned for a brief stint
at CKGM in the early 1980's, after he made a weekend appearance on a CJAD
Montreal radio reunion. From all accounts he headed to Pennsylvaina and
is still in that vincinity.

Oh yeah, who remembers the day he handed out one dollar bills on Greene
Avenue one St.Patricks day?

Was that before Steve Fullerton and All Talk Radio? I graduated from a
high school in Sugarcreek, OH in 1967, I have to say I listened to WHLO
then, but don't remember Ralph. Maybe it was something about those female
teenage bodies running around! <g>

I still have great and fond memories of listening to him in my groggy state
and slowly but cheerfully waking up to his show every morning in the late
seventies and early eighties when I was growing up in Montreal. In those d
ays we only had the radio and TV-unlike these days. One memory that stands
out is when Ralph Lockwood locked everyone out of the room and played "Rai
nbow Connection" by Kermit the Frog for a few hours. I believe it was aroun
d late 1979 or 1980 when he did the morning morning show for CKGM.
Such wonderful memories....

The Birdman was great. We had an AM radio in the kitchen of our Vermont cou
ntry home. Think "rustic". It was tuned to WWSR in St Albans. It was what t
he neighbor played in the barn. Kids weren't allowed to touch the tuner dia
l. I'd sneak in and tune in the Bird. He played Kermie all friggin morning
at least.

Wow I totally remember the Rainbow Connection scenario LOL! I was born in '
67 and we listened to CKGM from St Jean sur le Richelieu. We heard them ban
ging on the Studio door and windows. It made me chuckle when I began workin
g at 2 radio stations a couple of decades later when I became aware that St
udios are sound-proof! Ha!

The name of the player was Mike Widger linebacker for the Alouettes at the
time. I don't think he was married and was known around town as Cresent Str
eet Mike and a well known womanizer. I grew up listening to the Birdman and
all his characters. From high school until he left he was constantly on my
radio, he was great, good memories ... John Roveto

In the early 1960's Ralph Lockwood was a DJ at WSBA in York, PA. Everyone
loved him. Hre was great with "other studio characters" that he made up.
One that I remember well was "Lucious Laverne" who flirted with him. I oft
en wondered where he went or if he is still working. A really great guy.

Lockwood story is true. I listened to it live on a Monday morning after the
Als had won the Grey Cup the day before In Calgary or Regina. Ralph called
the Als’ hotel and was connected to Mike Widger’s room. Mi
ke was affectionately known as Crescent Street Mike for his legendary after
hours carousing. The phone rang in Widgers room and a female answered. Ral
ph asked to speak with Widger. There was the sound of sheets rustling follo
wed by the woman’s voice asking “ is your name Mike Widger
”? Absolutely a true story!
The entire call was live but I don’t know if Widgers wife heard the
call from their home in Montreal. As a footnote, Mike Widger died a couple
or three years ago.
