Well, the BLAZE (WWBZ 103.5), the lame attempt at "real rock" in Chicago
by Evergreen
Broadcasting is defunct. Which means the 2 or 3 times a week they played
Pantera or Slayer is now a memory, and Scott Loftus is again out of a gig.
The station has NO jocks (I don't know if this will change, they were
supposed to hire some high-profile shock jock for mornings...) everything
is canned, including the slams against the other stations in town.

Supposedly, they are aimed at males 25-34, somewhere between classic
rock WCKG (105.9) and modern rock Q-101, WKQX (101.1) "the new rock
alternative". What they sound like to me is a traditional AOR format
exactly like WLUP-FM98 (97.9) "the Loop" was like before they went to a
talk-heavy-with-AOR-music format (kind of a hip WGN, if you will).
WLUP and WWBZ are both owned by Evergreen.

So on the way in this morning, my wife & I heard:

La Grange -ZZTop
Are You Gonna Go My Way -Lenny Kravitz
The One I Love -REM
The Big Empty -Stone Temple Pilots
Dazed & Confused -Led Zeppelin

Later on I heard some Van Halen, "Miss You" by the Stones, ...

Over the weekend they played their whole playlist in alphabetical order.
Heard some Ozzie, some Springsteen, some Don Henley, some Floyd.

Yawwwwwwn. Glad I have the new C.D. by the Church sitting right here.

Sure hope someone starts up a REAL ROCK station here soon...

interesting....

back in may when I was in Chicago, I had been listening to all of
the stations mentioned above... it's kind of interesting... found
nothing that sounded like a traditional AOR station, just Q101 and 'CKG
and the Blaze.

.. but this sounds like the playlist of WMMS (Cleveland) and
WRQK (Canton) which ostensibly are both still AOR, although they
are playing heavy doses of modern rock.

What's your definition of real rock? A Z-ROCK type playlist?
I happen to like a lot of the stuff you mentioned, as well as
several of the bands you mention in your .sig (which you like, no?)

The point being that REAL ROCK is a matter of opinion. To some people
the Everly Brothers and Elvis and people from that time period define
rock 'n' roll...

I was browsing through this subject area and couldn't help but say that
I work for a station that is just exactly whats been described, almost a
CHR kind of rock that delves into the classics a bit every hour. The funny
thing about it is that our new positioning statement happens to be:
"Real Rock, Rock 104" I just had to chuckle to myself after reading the
response.

The Blaze has hired "ManCow" and recently he has been making fun of the
other Evergreen Broadcasting FM - morning drive time fun man Kevin
Mathews.

ManCow appears to be another Steve Dahl (15 years ago)/Howard Stern
immitator with a few funny tapes from his last job. Will not last in
Chicago market.
