Up & down the dial in the #40 market:
*CHOG became Talk640 at midnight on Wednesday. Kenny(the Hit Man)Caughlin
had the honor of being the last jock on what was AM640,and ended its career
at 10pm with Don McLean's "American Pie"(with the lyric "the day the music
died"). Caughlin, however, isn't going too far for his next job...just down
the hall to its sister station,CILQ(107.1,AOR/Maple Leafs flagship;Q 107;
http://www.q107.com). In his last show,he had gotten the OK to break format
and let the listeners request what they wish and play what he wanted;chatted
with ex-AM640er Jeff Chalmers(whom he'll be joining again at Q 107),and
gave a heartfelt goodbye to the staff(including PD Danny Kingsbury, and some
past PDs-who he said resisted the urge to fire him),and said he'd probably
check in to the new format. Caughlin had been at AM640 for 5 years, when it
was known as AM 640 The Hog-eventually jumping from a rock format to a CHR
one, becoming known as The Beat of Toronto.
Talk640's lineup looks like this:
5:30-9am:Wake Up Call(Jane Hawtin/Gene Valaitis)
9am-noon:Talk Line(Roy Green;show is done at fellow Westcom station
CHML(900,Hamilton)and fed to Talk640-which is ahead 5-15 seconds
of 'HML)
noon-1pm:The Fabulous Sports Babe
1-2pm:Jane Hawtin Live(audio simulcast of CHCH/WIC TV show)
2-4pm:Karen Horseman/Marsha Liederman
4-7pm:Bill Carroll
7-10pm:Sex,Lies & Audiotape(Shelley Klink)
10-11pm:replay of Jane Hawtin Live
11pm-mid.:replay of the Sports Babe
Odds are Talk640 will have to use some syndicated talk at night-however,
I couldn't find out what they're using(since I'm not a night owl :) ).
One of my tipsters wondered why the Sports Babe was on the station, saying
that's why The Fan 590 is there. IMO,the Babe would be a better fit there-and
Talk640 could have done a news hour at noon. He added that CHOG had begun to
make inroads with its CHR format until Westcom pulled the plug on it. Most
of the DJs(Tarzan Dan among them)had apparently left on Friday, though
Chris Eagle did a shift on Monday(a holiday up there).
*Rochester's WNVE(licensed to S.Bristol,95.1/95.5,modern rock/Stern;
The Nerve)has entered into a sales agreement with veteran AOR powerhouse
WCMF(96.5). The deal allows 'CMF's owners,American Radio Systems,to eventually
buy the station.
*Mercury Broadcasting,owners of WGRF(classic rock;97 Rock)and WEDG
(modern rock;103.3 the Edge),have added a major-market station to their
portfolio. An uncredited item in the Oct.16 Business First notes that
Mercury has agreed to buy Philadelphia's veteran talker,WWDB-FM(96.5)from
Panache Broadcasting for $48 million,in a deal announced October 9(Monday).
WWDB does relatively well in the City of Brotherly Love, getting top 5 12+
Arbitrons on a regular basis. The deal gives Mercury entry into the #5 market,
with radio revenues at $172.83 million, according to Radio Business Reports.
*Crawford Broadcasting, owners of WDCX(99.5,religious),are now programming
its 4th outlet-Albany's WDCD(1540),which was WPTR. It now gives Crawford
4 station in the state-the other 2 being WDCZ(102.7)in the Rochester area
and WDCW(1390)in Syracuse.
*WKSE(Kiss 98.5) AM drivers Janet Snyder & Nicholas Picholas returned to
the airon Monday...turns out they were only given a 1-day suspension for giving
out a Neiman-Marcus cookie recipe(which they charge $250 for)on the air. But,
they're not letting it die down...Snyder plans to give out copies of the recipe
tomorrow during an appearance.
*WJJL(1440,Niagara Falls;oldies)names Bill Yuhnke its promotional & PR
director. The WBUF and WWOL veteran will be responsible for coordinating
broadcasting and community projects. Lennie Rico was also named as a sales and
programming consultant-he currently hosts the Casa Rico program on the
weekends, which his parents started in 1933.
