Mike - WWCO was alway on 1240. The station went on the air in 1946 with
only 240 watts. I don't know where WTHT 1230 was located in Hartford, but
both cities are far enough apart for the 2 stations to exist at that time.

Somebody asked me about WBIB-FM and WELI-FM in New Haven. He said both
stations merged to become one. I don't know anything about the stations,
but a 1957 New Haven phone book lists a "WBIB Building Barber Shop".
Until I saw that book, I had never heard of WBIB.

Bill,
Rec'd your e-mail, and thanks. WTHT-AM studios and transmitter were
located in the American Industrial Building, 983 Main Street (across from
theG.Fox store) from August 1936 to December 1945 when the stations moved
to 555 Asylem Avenue,. WTHT went silent Feb. 13, 1954 and the studios
were converted for television. Channel 18 first came on as WGTH-TV
around August or September 1954.
WTHT was originally 100 watts daytime until August 1937. The antenna
was one tower when it was on Main Street. I don't know for certain but I
believe a new one-tower structure was erected on the 555 Asylum location.

The station went fulltime in August 1937 and sometime later got
permission to raise power to 250 watts day, 100 watts night and ulimately
250 watts full- time. To the best of my knowledge, RCA transmitting
equipment was used all the time WTHT was on the air.
Thanks again for your note and if you (or anyone) gets more information
on WTHT, please pass it along.

Somehow I remember hearing that WATR was at 1240 and things moved around. I
was under the impression that WWCO went on the air in 1947 with studios in
the Mattatuch Museum. I could be wrong on this.

Whe nI worked for WELI I was told that another station was absorbed by WELI
in the late fifties. There was a very interesting story that went with
it...but like my hairline, it's just a faded memory.
