Sinclair Acknowledges Ransomware Attack Affecting Their Former Seattle
Radio Stations

Posted: 18 Oct 2021 07:05 AM PDT
https://radioinsight.com/headlines/214209/sinclair-acknowledges-ransomware-attack-affecting-their-former-seattle-radio-stations/

Sinclair Broadcast Group has confirmed it was hit by a ransomware attack
over the weekend affecting operations at its properties across the country.

While Sinclair no longer owns any radio properties, the cluster of Seattle
radio stations the company recently sold to Lotus Communications continues
to be co-located at Sinclairs offices in the KOMO Plaza building. Local
reports indicate that Hot AC Star 101.5 KPLZ-FM has had intermittent
dead-air, songs skipping, and no imaging between songs. News 1000 KOMO/97.7
KOMO-FM was running a replay of a longform talk show rather than its
regular news programming on Sunday afternoon. Online streaming is also down
for KPLZ-FM, KOMO and Conservative Talk 570 KVI.

Sinclair states that certain servers and workstations in its environment
were encrypted with ransomware, and that certain office and operational
networks were disrupted, while data was taken from the companys network.

Sinclair Broadcast Group, Inc. (Nasdaq: SBGI) today provided information on
a recent cybersecurity incident.

On October 16, 2021, the Company identified and began to investigate and
take steps to contain a potential security incident. On October 17, 2021,
the Company identified that certain servers and workstations in its
environment were encrypted with ransomware, and that certain office and
operational networks were disrupted. Data also was taken from the Company’s
network. The Company is working to determine what information the data
contained and will take other actions as appropriate based on its review.

Promptly upon detection of the security event, senior management was
notified, and the Company implemented its incident response plan, took
measures to contain the incident, and launched an investigation. Legal
counsel, a cybersecurity forensic firm, and other incident response
professionals were engaged. The Company also notified law enforcement and
other governmental agencies. The forensic investigation remains ongoing.

While the Company is focused on actively managing this security event, the
event has caused – and may continue to cause – disruption to parts of the
Company’s business, including certain aspects of its provision of local
advertisements by its local broadcast stations on behalf of its customers.
The Company is working diligently to restore operations quickly and
securely.

As the Company is in the early stages of its investigation and assessment
of the security event, the Company cannot determine at this time whether or
not such event will have a material impact on its business, operations or
financial results.

As the Company conducts its investigation, it will look for opportunities
to enhance its existing security measures.

Nielsen Debuts New Brand Identity

Posted: 18 Oct 2021 05:47 AM PDT
https://radioinsight.com/headlines/214206/nielsen-debuts-new-brand-identity/

Nielsen (NYSE: NLSN) unveiled a new brand campaign, including a new
identity, reflecting the company’s transformation of its culture and a
redefined strategy focused solely on the global future of media. Nielsen’s
new look and feel represents a commitment to innovation and the company’s
role and purpose of powering a better media future for all people.

Following the sale of its Global Connect business in March 2021, Nielsen is
now focused on delivering digital-first and global-first media solutions in
three areas—measurement, audience outcomes and content services. Nielsen is
combining and enhancing its industry-leading measurement solutions into a
single cross-media measurement solution, Nielsen One. With an unmatched
foundation of cross platform measurement, Nielsen offers a full suite of
planning and outcomes solutions for marketers and agencies to enhance their
return on investments. Nielsen also continues to enhance its Gracenote
content services business, delivering leading metadata and analytics for On
Demand content globally.

“While our business has transformed dramatically over the past few years,
it became clear that perceptions of the company have not evolved at the
same pace,” said Jamie Moldafsky, Chief Marketing and Communications
Officer. “The rebranding marks a new Nielsen both inside the company and
out, with a strategy hyper-focused on the global audience and the changing
media environment. Nielsen’s core values of inclusion, courage and growth,
along with its clear strategy, will power the company’s transformation as
we partner with the industry and our clients to help them better understand
how evolving audiences consume media and find content.”

The new brand identity will be unveiled at Advertising Week New York, which
will be held October 18 – 21.Signage showcasing the elements of the
rebranding will be prominently displayed on the fifth and sixth floors of
Hudson Yards. Nielsen will also host a daily breakfast at its lounge, which
will feature the new logo, images and colors, in line with the company’s
new brand identity.

Initial elements of Nielsen’s brand evolution include:

New Logo: As a prominent representation of the company, people and brand,
the new logo is playful, optimistic and smart. Inspired by the universal
play button as well as ratings, the forms come together subtly to create an
‘N’ letterform in the negative space, signifying insights revealed by
Nielsen’s data and the constant momentum in media.

New Brand Colors: The multitude of fresh colors speaks to the diversity and
richness in media representing or containing a piece of data, a piece of
music, a show, a content creator, or a member of the audience, all working
together to move media forward. The green and orange triangles represent
movement upwards and downwards, an expression of ratings and the popularity
of content across all platforms. The red triangle nods towards the content
not seen or heard. Data and insights are just as much about what people
don’t choose to consume, as what they do consume.

New Brand Purpose Statement: Powering a Better Media Future for All People.

Alt 105.3 San Francisco Is Briefly Resurrected

Posted: 17 Oct 2021 02:30 PM PDT
https://radioinsight.com/headlines/214180/alt-105-3-san-francisco-is-briefly-resurrected/

After flipping on Friday afternoon to Variety Hits 105.3 Dave-FM, the
former format returned to KITS San Francisco this morning.

Technical issues took the Dave-FM format off for about 12 hours starting on
Saturday evening. The issues began taking place around 8:40pm pacific time
as KITS ran hours straight of nothing but commercials after what were told
was caused by a corrupted music database for the new format. When music
returned a little after midnight it was running an old log of Alt 105.3
from the spring of 2020. That programming would last until just before 10am
this morning as Dave-FM returned with Tom Pettys Dont Do Me Like That.

INSTANT INSIGHT: Had KITS not changed format on Friday, this would not have
registered a blip on anyones radar other than the disgruntled listeners
sitting through the non-stop music-free commercial sets. From what weve
been told the music library for the new format became corrupted within the
automation system leading to the crash. The lack of a backup library and
log due to the newness of the format is just bad luck.

Our best wishes go out to the Audacy engineers and staffers who lost their
Saturday night and Sunday morning working to resolve the problems and
getting the proper programming back on the air due to something they had
very little control over happening.
