There was a dance song that came out probably in the mid-late 80's....it had
a dance beat (whomp-whomp-whomp)...but interspersed thru the song were what
sounded like (Gregorian?) chants. i.e..old church sounding chants.

They were blended in the song (with the right chords/harmonies and
timing)...so they actually almost sounded like they belonged there.

Anyone got any idea what this title is?

[ Moderator's Note: The group's name is Enigma. They had a couple singles,
at least. The one I remember is "Mea Culpa". The other big hit they had
was "Return to Innocense"[sp?] - but that sounded more like a Native American
song than a Gregorian chant... but anyhow, look up Enigma on the web... ]

Thanks!

As our moderator said, the group is Enigma. The song the poster is thinking
of is called "Sadeness Part I". My CD Single doesn't give the name of the
album, only the stock number - Virgin Classics #VC 791110-2. It was big
during my first year in college which was 1990-1991. Enigma also had
another hit "Return to Innocence" which is from the alnum "The Cross of
Changes".

Note, the name of the album is "MCMXC AD" (1990 AD). I remember this
song (Sadeness Pt. 1) just being Huge, both on the radio and in the
clubs. It was so unique and original at the time. Another band you may
like if you like this Genre is DEEP FOREST. They had a really good
song called "Sweet Lullaby", from 1993 I think.

The Return to Innocence song used Taiwanese chanters but did not pay them! -
they won n a suite and got their deserved royalites.

Other groups/artists you may like with similar sound (I personally like this
type music) are: 1. Hevia 2. ERA 3. Loreena McKinnett

An unjust king asked a devotee what kind of worship is best? He replied:
'For thee the best is to sleep one half of the day so as not to injure the
people for a while.'

I saw a tyrant sleeping half the day.
I said: 'This confusion, if sleep removes it, so much the better;
But he whose sleep is better than his wakefulness
Is better dead than leading such a bad life.'

The Mummers Dance, by Loreena McKinnett, got a lot of airplay here on
one of the AC stations. I heard it often, and I don't know that I'd classify
it as similar. But then, what do I know :)

Ya that got airplay - and the Mystic's Dream too (a little). She's more
Celtic/Arabic/Instrumental/NewAge (difficult to pin down). Hevia is similar
(Celtic/Arabic/Spanish) He's actually Galasian(sp) (NW Spain so the Celtic
part makes sense).

I forgot to mention "Adiamous"(sp) - they had chant stuff. For anyone
interested goto:

There's a crapload of cool music in those groups. I'm indepted to
"Celtophile" for posting most of it! ;-)
