Epitaph for Roger St. John

Roger St. John, our midday jock, a guy I knew for 11
years, passed away suddenly very early this past Thursday
morning. He died of a massive heart attack a few hours after
getting home from a club night. Our General Manager called
me 45 minutes before I went on the air to inform us of his
death. Needless to say, it was a very sad, unfortunate
morning. We shared our feelings on the air as other staff
members came into the station and into the studio upon
hearing the news. Listeners were just as distraught as we
were. It was a morning of tears, shock and raw emotion.

Roger worked a string of major markets before coming to
Q94 14 years ago. You might have heard him, you might not
have. If you never did, let me say a few words on his
behalf.

Roger was the smile and handshake of Q94. He was a
jock, plain and simple. He cut his teeth on Rock and stayed
in Top 40 his whole career. His whole purpose, his whole
joy, his whole career was dedicated to enjoying just being a
"jock".

Roger was everything that's still right with this
business. Unfortunately, there seems to be less and less
room for people like him anymore. Radio has become a
conglomerate of ties and white shirts who trade radio
stations and know little else of the joys of programming
beyond an Arbitron.

Roger was just a jock. He loved the music, loved the
jingles, loved the appearances, loved the remotes, loved the
club nights, loved the listeners.

Roger St. John was only 47. I'll miss him.

I grew up in Richmond listening to Q94. I live in Atlanta now, but visited
my parents in Virginia last year. While there, I came across my old casse
tte tapes - the ones I recorded on my "boom box" of my favorite songs as th
ey were played on Q94. Of course, Roger St. John's voice was on these tape
s. I remember listening to Q94 the day he died, and hearing the DJs voice
crack when talking about him. I never met him, but his voice is part of my
life's soundtrack.

I grew up in the 80's listening to Q-94 and my favorite was Roger Saint John. I would give anything to hear his voice again. If you know of anyone that has a recording of one of his shows can you ask them to post it on here.
