Phil Donahue broadcast from all over the Midwest, starting with Dayton.
From Dayton he moved to Cincinnati, then Cleveland, Chicago and New York,
going to a larger market each time he moved.
I remember watching WHIO TV's evening news with Phil Donahue and the late
Don Wayne. Brought to us by Pantorium Cleaners! Remember the sports guy on
WHIO, Lyle Steig? I heard he wound up selling Christmas trees the year
after he left WHIO. As I recall Lyle was once a "Dayton Gems" ice hockey
player. The sports director of WHIO was Tom Hamlin, one individual I really
couldn't stomach on TV.

Sorry, before my time.
I lived in Dayton in 1989-1990 when I was at school at UD.
My favorite is Omar Williams at Channel 2. Actually, I liked the whole
news staff there better than any of the other stations in Southwest Ohio.
Although the two sports guys on 22 were kinda cool, with one rooting for
Cleveland and the other rooting for Cincinnati during football season... :)

Good lord! Omar Williams is still at 2? I left the Miami Valley in 1973.
C. K. Elston (the deep-voiced booth announcer at 2) had a son attending West
Carrollton HS.
He was one of those anti-establishment types and went by the name "K. C."
Elston. I recall C.K.lived in the vicinity of the Dayton Mall.
Is Steve Kirk still on WING? I know he did own the place at one time. Does
he still do those horrible Sunday afternoon Tatone Buick comos on TV? Ah,
cha cha cha...

Kirky "retired" some years ago to Florida. Never really seemed to be
able to adjust to the fact it was NOT the 1960's anymore. Don't get
me wrong. I used to listen to him as a kid growing up but he kept
trying to do the same "schtick" decades later.
Tatone....."Drive a little, Save a Lot!"
Don Brown still does sports at 22. I worked with him at WWSU 88.5
(Wright State) in the late 70's and them with him at WHIO.. Doing
great at 22 I think.

Lyle ran into some problems. Went to Michigan for a while. Did some
PBP for hockey and some club work, I believe. Nice guy. He had some
VERY big shoes to fill replacing Gil Whitney at Channel 7. Gil dies
of cancer in the late 70's ("Wooly Bear Report").....he told the
dirtiest damn jokes! LOL
