Folks,

I am trying to decide between a TS-2000 and TS-870S.
The 2000 seems to have more options/bands/bells/whistles,
but the 870 has the higher price tag? It appears there is more in
the 2000 so why is it so much less expensive than the
870? What feature set in the 870 demands the higher
price tag? I thought both rigs had similar DSP functionality
The 2000 appears to have many more bells/whistles...

Am I going to be sacrificing receiver performance
for bells/whistles if I go 2000...

Just trying to figure out the price difference...

Im seeing the 2000 for ~$1800 street and the 870
for ~$2300.

Thanks for your comments...

I do not know, but I am only guessing.
The TS-2000 in newer, has fewer parts and cost them less to build.

I have only played with the radios in a dealer's showroom... not a good
place to form important opinions. I was considering a 2000, especially at
today's price levels. I thought the 870 receiver played better. The
salesman agreed. Then when I read a 2000 review (ARRL?) it left the
definite impression that the 2000 does "more stuff" than most other radios,
and does most of them adequately... but is not particularly outstanding at
any of them. That's pretty much the impression I had, though I'm sure many
2000 owners will take issue with that statement. "Different Strokes...."

When a manufacturer whacks prices like that it tells me one of two things.
Either there is a better model on the horizon or the current one isn't
selling as they had hoped. Same thing happened to me on the Icom 756PRO. I
paid $2,900... now it's going for $1,800. VERY soon after, the PRO II
showed up.

Hi There,

I have a TS870 and my mate has the TS2000.

We've compared them and to be honest. The 870 comes out on top for receive.

It's a case of horses for courses.

The 870 is a pure HF rig and all of the common used functions AGC, Power,
Key Speed, etc are readily available on the front panel. Whereas on the 2000
they're tucked away in dual function (multi press) buttons.

I like the 870 because once the menu is set to your preferences all you have
to do is use it. There are no multi-presses, etc.

Granted the 2000 has more whistles and bells. TNC, 2m, 70cm etc. but at the
same time you have decide whether you want to risk putting all of your eggs
in one basket.

I lke them both but I prefer the 870.

Cheers Chris.

I heard the receiver is quite LOUSY on the 2000 (particulary vhf).
The 870 is a good radio, I felt the DSP makes things a sound little
"ringy" though.

The TS-2000 has as good or better sensitivity and selectivity figures as
any of the dedicated SAT rigs, and has 5-10 dB better image rejection than
any of them. If the specs are real, then the TS-2000 is as good or better
on VHF than the Kenwood TS-790, Yaesu FT-847, Icom 910, or Yaesu FT-736.
The only SAT rig that I found (so far) that had a better receive spec was
the Icom 970 with receive sensitivity of .11 microvolts, as compared to the
typical .16 microvolts of the others.

(I have been shopping for a new SAT rig... :>)
