Tracking Police cars

There has to be a way to track police cars. Does anybody know if they are
using packet radios to transmit their position to the central station?

They use something called MDT or something like that.
It sends a short burst after the operator unkeys his/her mic.
IF you search long enough, you can find monitoring
software for it on the 'net, although I do not know where anymore.
I have tried it in the past but could not seem to make it work.
