Finally snagged an HF antenna to pair with my FT857

https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vp1it8/finally_snagged_an_hf_antenna_to_pair_with_my/

Took advantage of chameleon’s 20% off 4th of July sale to grab a MPAS 2.0
to pair with my FT857.
The radio’s been pulling VHF/UHF duty, as I’m only a tech. The purchase
finally got me motivated to order my General study guide!
I’ve also been using a Morse Code training app, might even start dabbling
in cw! submitted by /u/dgansen1

Measuring antenna - different SWR value from VNA and SWR meter

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 10:32 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vp69br/measuring_antenna_different_swr_value_from_vna/

Hello guys.
I am little confused here.
I am testing some rubber duck antenna with VNA(DeepVNA) and SWR(Surecom
SW-102).
I am getting different SWR reading between the two. The antenna is UHF only.
The VNA shows that lowest SWR of about 1.1 is @ 390Mhz
Infinite SWR @ 145 Mhz
https://preview.redd.it/w3vx6qb2rz891.jpg?width=4608&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=206acefc5bbebac52adb18d515eff64a3990e72a

At the same time, measuring the antenna with a SWR meter shows different
values.
SWR of 2.8 @ 390Mhz and 8.5 @ 145Mhz
https://preview.redd.it/ra2mwcvfrz891.jpg?width=4608&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c5ff3f4df0c8a5c423e39ba4542bb01de5fe561b
https://preview.redd.it/itfpda1hrz891.jpg?width=4608&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b995783956c10e44cb90c1cf435ce7ecf09590d1
Also moving the devices and antenna around changes the reading quite a bit,
but I never managed to make both devices "say" the same thing. Guess that
happens due to signal reflections in the room.
Since I am total noob in this area, can someone please briefly explain what
is happening? Are my devices bad? Is this normal? Which reading is more
correct? Are my antennas bad?
I thought this antenna should be tuned at around 430Mhz, but measuring that
freq with the SWR meter showed SWR of about 2.5.
Any feedback from your guys will be very much appreciated.
Regards. submitted by /u/pokibg

Best counterpoise location for EFHW

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 12:56 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vp9i6n/best_counterpoise_location_for_efhw/

Is there a good antenna theory explanation for the best counterpoise
placement with an EFHW? Ive tried it several different ways, and the
difference is hard for me to tell. Ive seen advice to put the counterpoise
perpendicular to the antenna wire, or parallel to the wire (under it)
laying on the ground, or elevated a few feet above the ground. My intuition
says parallel and and elevated would be best, sort of like ground radials
for a vertical antenna, but I could be wrong.
Also is there any benefit to lengthening the counterpoise, or adding
multiple counterpoises, if my existing counterpoise is already keeping
common mode currents in check? If theres an opportunity for me to improve
my reception or transmit a little with some counterpoise changes, Id love
to know. submitted by /u/blinkybit

FT8 on 70cm

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 07:41 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vp2fxu/ft8_on_70cm/

Hey folks, Ive been pulling my hair out trying to find an answer for this
one. What frequency are you supposed to run FT8 on if youre working 70cm?
Ive seen 432.065 and 432.174, but .065 overlaps with EME on the
bandplan. .174 is good for weak-signal stuff in the bandplan, but Ive
hardly heard any activity on it. submitted by /u/hackersmacker

Using a mast as a tower for the antenna

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 12:09 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vp8h44/using_a_mast_as_a_tower_for_the_antenna/

Hello, how are you? I wanted to ask you about your experience using a mast
made of a pipe as an antenna tower, its benefits and drawbacks. In this
case, I am going to use a 9-meter mast for WIFI antennas with guying that
is already assembled, because I do not have a welder to put clamps for the
guying on an ordinary pipe. I wanted to hear your opinions and experience
on the subject. Will I have to paint it against rust? Do I need to wall it
with stainless bolts? Its going to be on top of the roof of my house, so I
think it would be about 12 meters high in total, and Im going to put a
dipole antenna on it. I live in a densely populated city, but with low
buildings. Thanks a lot! submitted by /u/Drogadonte

Boat Anchors On the Air

I just had a showerthought while I was looking at the Contest Calendar and
realized there should be a boat anchor contest in there somewhere. I think
the minimum qualifications should be at least 50 lbs of transmitter weight
and frequency plus or minus 5 to 10 for the boat anchor drift. I am curious
what other contest rules there should be. submitted by /u/FlummoxedOne

FCC payment

Hey guys, not sure if this is the best place to post, but just a quick
question. I passed my tech exam this past Tuesday, the 28th. I got my CSCE
yesterday, but still no email from the FCC requesting their $35 payment and
it’s not showing up for me under the FRN quick payment link after I login.
Does anyone know how long it should take to show up or get that email?

Will I need to unplug a dipole inside an enclosed garage during a lightning
storm?

I am about to put up a dipole in a garage and I saw a recent post about a
storm system and lightning which got me wondering if I will need to do the
same? I know if they are external there is a much greater risk which got me
wondering about it being inside. submitted by /u/n3ur0n3rd

Advice needed - portable radio with plug in foot pedal/ headset interface.

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 07:56 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vp2rvo/advice_needed_portable_radio_with_plug_in_foot/

Hi there, first time poster here. Not experienced in this field at all.
I work in a lot of temporary control rooms for major events, festivals etc,
in Australia.
Often we are only provided with handheld UHF radios. Sometimes we are
provided with base stations with foot pedal/headset.
I have been trying to find an interface that would let me plug a handheld
radio into a switch that gave me a foot pedal and headset option ensuring I
didn’t have to rely on what was provided.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.
Thank you. submitted by /u/swekel

What is the reason for opposition to eQSL.cc?

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 01:42 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vpaiay/what_is_the_reason_for_opposition_to_eqslcc/

Is there a particular reason why a group amateurs are against eQSL.cc? When
I visit profiles on QRZ, a notable subset of folks are quite adamant that
they will not entertain confirmation via eQSL, yet they will accept other
services.
I just havent determined what is the argument against eQSL, especially if
the logging program handles it. Although the proprietor of QRZ is surly and
reactionary, like his removal of Russian amateurs, QRZ is the de facto
source, so it is hard to ignore. The ARRL is a political group by
definition, so it naturally has opposition. The other services simply seem
to be less popular.
... Granted, the UI for eQSL.cc is ancient and difficult. ... submitted

Why is my FT5DR saving all memories to both A Band and B Band?

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 09:11 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vp4i8q/why_is_my_ft5dr_saving_all_memories_to_both_a/

I just got my new FT5DR yesterday. Everytime I save a memory from either
the A band or B band VFO it saves the memory to memory channels of both
bands instead of just the band the VFO belongs to. I have searched the
various manuals and can not find a reference to that being an option that
can be turned on or off. I also have a FTM400XDR and the saving memories
from either A or B VFO saves it to the correct A or B band memories. Anyone
else experience this? Any advice?
