Hey all! New tech KF0JRT. Bought a Feng UVS9+ and am finding the hard way
that I just cant talk to anybody. I live in a small farming town and any
active repeater is 25 to 30 miles away. Is it worth looking for a more
powerful HT connected to a bigger antenna, or should I skip right to 50W
mobile?

Sometimes on YouTube I see ham radio operators on 2 meters or HF letting
their family members communicate, is that allowed as long as you (the ham
radio operator of your station) is present with your family members?

Why do so many end fed calculators treat 2/2 lambda 4/2 lambda, 6/2 lambda,
etc. as 'high impedance'?

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 08:43 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vobg3l/why_do_so_many_end_fed_calculators_treat_22/

I am planning to experiment with my first custom built antenna, a simple
end fed.
The popular online calculators seem to caution against ALL half wavelength
multiples, which is strange because 2/2 lambda = 1 lambda. In other words,
even multiple harmonics would resonate quite well, right?
Im scratching my head wondering why the popular calculators seem to ignore
this fact. There are MATLAB, SciLab, and C programs posted online that
ignore this aspect.
For what its worth, I am developing a similar end fed impedance calculator,
taking into consideration that even half wave multiples resonate with low
impedance. This opens up possibilities for many more practical antenna wire
lengths, compared to earlier calculators.

How is DSTAR not encryption if it is closed source?

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 09:40 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/voct00/how_is_dstar_not_encryption_if_it_is_closed_source/

From what I can find per the googles, the FCC allows the use of algorithms
to encode radio signals, but they must be widely available else it is
encryption and not allowed. DSTAR isnt open source so how is it not
encryption and allowed?
Does anybody have any FCC decisions or anything on this issue? I am a big
advocate for FOSS software and this irritates me. I believe it is
encryption and not encoding b/c I cant look at the source code, or at least
get a binary.
Im a lawyer so if all you have is a dense hard-to-read decision without
explanation or just cite to a opinion Im fine with that. I can figure it
out from there submitted by /u/Marconi_and_Cheese

Anyone running 900 MHz?

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 01:24 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vohyc1/anyone_running_900_mhz/

Ive been looking into getting a repurposed handheld and/or mobile. There
are some repeaters in my area, including one maybe a mile or two away from
me. Some with all-star links and some that are networked to other repeaters
throughout the state of Texas. Used equipment doesnt seem that terribly
expensive, I am mainly looking at the Kenwood TK 981 and NX 411. Not sure
about mobile antennas.
I currently have a mobile rig, and I dont know if I could fit a second
radio and antenna, but there are enough repeaters in the area that it could
be fun to play with. submitted by /u/SonicResidue

Can you identify this tiny 12v connector?

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 12:38 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vogxb7/can_you_identify_this_tiny_12v_connector/

I want to upgrade the fans on my radios to Noctuas. The noise is driving me
crazy.
I have found the correct fans, but the connectors that come on the Noctura
do not fit the radio.
Yes, I can just splice them, but that will void my warranty on two very new
radios.
So I thought I would buy the correct plug for the connector and use that on
the Noctura and not cut up the factory wiring so I could swap back to the
factory fan if I ever have to send in for warranty work.
Google image search has led me the "Mini Micro JST PH 2 Pin Connector" ,
but I cannot tell if that is the correct size
Screenshots are from the excellent fan swap guide for the 2730A by KD9PAH.
Fan pics of the FT891 here, seem to be the same type of connector
Thanks!

How will West Virginia vs EPA affect anything? The FCC is bound by the same

The USSC just ruled that TLAs have some serious limits on the rules they
can impose. Anything that the FCC imposed that is now liable to be voided

you could have the perfect logging app, what features would it have?

More power captain?

I live midpoint on the side of a hill surrounded by other hills. If I walk
to the top of the hill I can hit 2 more repeaters I would not be able to
otherwise using a 5W HT. If I purchase a 25W transmitter and antenna for my
house, do you think it would help push my signal over the hills?

Finally figured out my car's RFI... anyone dealt with noisy gauges?

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 07:52 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/voq5ad/finally_figured_out_my_cars_rfi_anyone_dealt_with/

I have an older diesel truck, thats about as non-electrically motivated as
any car could be made in the last 30 years, and its always had bad RFI on
2M. Sometimes its bad enough I get a 10 second long noise blast with max
squelch on 2M (not 70cm).

And I finally figured out the cause, my a-pillar cluster of ISSPRO
(example) gauges. Its been staring me in the face this whole time while I
went about chasing everything but that. Doh.

Has anyone had this before? I kinda need the gauges when towing and in the
mountains. I have direct leads to the battery, toroids on each end of every
cable except the power (hmm...). Ill be reaching out to ISSPRO, just
curious if this is a common thing? Aside from the hydrometer, the other two
are largely mechanical aside from their backlights: fuel pressure and boost
gauge. submitted by /u/Cyclic404

Why end fed quarter wave but dipole half wave?

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 12:52 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/voh8rz/why_end_fed_quarter_wave_but_dipole_half_wave/

People online are saying that dipoles ideally target half wavelengths,
while end feds ideally target quarter wavelengths. That using half for end
fed or quarter for dipole, results in a poorly performing antenna. And may
even cause electrical damage to equipment. But why?
Isnt a dipole just two end feds joined at the hip? Why come joining two end
feds into a dipole suddenly flips the quarter-vs-half impedance rule on its
head?
Please explain like Im five years old. Because Im new to radio. Got my
Technician license, but have only begun to dip my toes into the waters of
antenna theory. submitted by /u/n4jm4

DMR Radio

I’m looking into getting a TYT VHF/uhf DMR radio and getting more into it.
I can’t find a lot of info online about it. Can someone explain what DMR is
used for in America? Also could it be used as a GMRS radio? Finally I have
some public safety frequencies around me that haven’t gone to digital. I’m
able to pick them up on a UV5r(it’s set to receive only) . Could I maybe
listen to those also with a DMR radio. Thank you. submitted by

PCV antenna tower... maybe yes.

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 09:44 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vocwkv/pcv_antenna_tower_maybe_yes/

I happened noticed an article in the January 1981 issue of QST about a PCV
antenna tower. The author designed and built 30ft towers for a phased array
antenna using CL 125 PVC sprinkler pipe and triangular wooden gusset plates
(triangular spacers.) Light enough to be lifted with one hand it requires
some bracing or guys.
(Note: class and schedule are different. The author isnt clear about this.
CL 125 pipe is very thin wall. For 2" pipe the wall thickness of CL 125 is
only 0.073" while schedule 80 is 0.218" thick)
I think hes on to something. Im may try this with ABS pipe (not foam core)
and plates cut from ABS sheet so they can be cemented together. It would
then be painted for UV protection.

Edit: January not July, thanks u/squeakyc submitted by /u/ArmstrongRotor
