My rig has "TS-820" on the front panel and rear nameplate, but it does
include a digital frequency display. Is it really a TS-820, or an
early TS-820S ?

You heard correctly. I have a TS-820S, and the only difference between
the 820 and the 820S is that the S has the digital display built in. It
mentions this right on the first page of the operating manual.
