Aspidistra.

Part of the air defences of the Third Reich was the switching-off of the local transmitters of national radio
services, to warn the population that an air raid was heading for that region.

Aspidistra was part of a system that monitored said national programmes, and also the local transmitters in the
areas concerned. When the target transmitters went off the air, they were replaced by Aspidistra rebroadcasting
the national programme on the same frequency, thus delaying the warning to the local population. It was said
that this could be done in about a millisecond, little more than a click in the local population's receivers.

'Total War', an invention of the Germans, was somewhat callous, the UK being absolved from any opprobrium
due to not being one of the parties that started it.

Aspidistra, named from a Gracie Fields (spit)[1] song containing the line 'the biggest Aspidistra in the world'.

[1] Singing 'There'll Always Be An England', from the safety of New York, having married an Italian which just
happened to have the benefit of keeping them both out of the (heavily bombed) UK, and in complete and utter
contrast to, say, Bebe Daniels and Ben Lyon.

For quite some time into the war, the British authorities were not
exactly friendly to non-combatant Italians. I doubt if Boris would have
been all that welcome here - and probably would have been interned.
[Didn't this prompt him to get (or try to get) US citizenship?] I
understand that, later on, Gracie Fields did a fair bit moral-boosting
by touring and performing with ENSA.

I think this period of her life was graced, if that be the term, with less popularity than previously, and some at
least of her ENSA shows were well received - by foreign troops such as the Australians in New Guinea.

Bebe Daniels and her husband were living here anyway, and stayed on through the blitz despite having a young
family.

"Licence re-validation

It was noted that there had been changes with the website login authentication process that had caused
difficulties. Ofcom was considering automatically re-validating all licences until end-2016 to provide time to
correct this, and also to bring in an alternative paper based process."

This is turning into a farce.

Mrs Spike's validation only worked once or twice, and now mine has failed too.

The idea was to validate yearly, but this essentially the problem looks like being kicked into the long grass of
2017 - and I may well be past caring by then.
