HISTORY
Oldest license found - 5YM - dated 6/4/20, but there is anecdotal evidence
that we may have been licensed in 1914. Microfiche confirms licensing in
1916 as 9YM - note the wrong district! That was corrected two months
later. The station was active in the early '20s prior to the opening of
KFMQ, the U of A's first broadcast station. Logs have been found for the
'32-'34 period when the station (*W*5YM) was active on 'phone using a
Class B modulation amplifier built as a class project. Loy Barton,
inventor of Class B, was a graduate and faculty member of the U of A.
Haven't found any relics from '34 - '49. 1949 we were granted W5JNI and
our station was in the then-Business Admin building. We suspect the
trustee knew nothing of the previous station as he was not in engineering.
We returned to W5YM in 1952 and the club has been going strong pretty much
ever since.

History:
The club was first licensed in 1913 under the call sign 5YA.
We have a certificate from the ARRL dated back in May 06, 1971, that
recognizes our club. We have a "Golden Jubilee of the ARRL DX Century Club"
certificate for over 100 contacts worldwide in 1987, such certificate is
dated back to February 05, 1988. There are no records showing activity
until the early 80's, we still have some of the older club constitutions
dating back to these dates. Currently the club meets once a month.
We conduct a net on Monday nights on both the 444.80 and the 147.24 repeaters.
We also participate in various community events such as races, and
thriatlons. Most of these events are perform in collaboration with
members of the East Alabama Amateur Radio Club, which is the local
club for non-students.

HISTORY
I worked on this last year. Essentially, we were formed
in 1914 as one of the first stations on the west coast.
We started DX receiving experiments at this time, and
soon established skeds with the University of Washington
and a few other schools. Our first call was 6BB and dates
back to at least 1920. I think oneof our members was the
first woman to get a commercial radiotelephone operators
license in 1924. Early on we were also connected withthe
commercial station here at Cal, and did early broadcasts
from football games, alumni dinners, etc. Club fell into
decline in the1930's, but was revived after the war,
and has followed typical boomand bust cycles since.

HISTORY
We're still looking for our roots, but have narrowed it down to 1947.
That's about as good as it gets for now, but we're looking for more
history on our club.
Our club is an Engineering Department affiliated club, but recently we're
attracting members from other walks of life, adding to our diversity.
We're involved in ARES/RACES, with our station being capable of running
on our own emergency generator at a moment's notice.
We've recently obtained a high-level mountaintop site, and are working on
the basics there (ie: electricity, antenna masts, etc) and look forward
to expanding our local coverage. Current plans for the mountaintop include:
440 repeater linked to our 146.760 repeater on campus (w/autopatch)
2m crossband repeater (linked to 440 repeater) with two-tone paging
capabilities for ARES/RACES callouts
2m repeater on the WALA (Western Amateur Linking Association) system
2m digipeater on the Packet DX-Cluster
440 digipeater for high-speed digital (56kb?) for real-time Internet
Interests of individual club members includes DXing, ARES/RACES, FM
voice, packet, ATV, and 10GHz digital.

The Harvard Wireless Club, founded in 1909, is America's oldest
amateur radio club. HWC operators have made thousands of contacts
in a variety of transmission modes over the past eight decades.

HISTORY
The club has been around for many years. The original
club was W0YI. It was founded over 75 years ago. The
W0YI club call is still maintained here at ISU by one
of our faculty members.
Our club has approximately 20 members who are somewhat
active. There are many more hams here at ISU, but many
of them are too busy with their studies and other clubs
to become involved with the CARC. We are always in
search of new membership.
Our members can usually be found on 2meters or 70cm.
At this point in time, there is very little HF activity
in the club.
Our club has been involved at ISU for many years. We have
meetings several times per month. Every spring, we set up
an open house display and help with communications for the
annual VEISHEA celebration, which is the largest student-run
event of its kind in the United States. We provide
communications for the VEISHEA parade, calling tow trucks,
ambulances, and the police if the need arises.
It is best for new prospective members or people
interested in the club to call me or Clyde Walter at
the numbers above. I am only at ISU during the Fall and
Spring semesters, while Clyde is a professor who is here
year around if the need arises to contact the club in the
summer months.

HISTORY:
JCARS was started in 1981 with the primary focus of satellite
operation. We were the first Ham radio club in central Pennsylvania to have
an active satellite station and were early users of Oscar 8 and Oscar 10.
JCARS offered amateur radio classes from 1981 thru 1993 for the college
students as well as local citizens. We are going to resume these classes
this winter as well as offering licensing exams on a regular basis as we have
in the past.

HISTORY
The MTSU club has been around since at least the 1960s, first as a
trusteeship of the Dept. of Industrial Studies, and now under the
Dept. of Computer Science. Membership has been small because the
historic mission of the University was that of a teacher's college
(thankfully that's changing). The Raider Amateur Radio Club is a
key player in the packet radio field, and its members provide part
of the core support in a project to bring high-speed (56k bps and
up) packet connectivity to the entire state of Tennessee, from
Mountain City to Memphis.

HISTORY
The Northwestern Amateur Radio Society dates back until late
40s or early 50s. It has been affiliated with the McCormick
school of Technology and the department of Electrical
Engineering since its inception. The club has achieved many
awards over the years, including one of the very early 5-band
DXCC's.
In 1991 a storm took down our main tower and antenna, and the
shack had fallen into disrepair. However, in 1992 Drs. Allen
Taflove and Alan Sahakian took over the faculty advisor
position, and launched an effort to bring the station back on
the air. In the summer of 1992 a new tower was erected at a
better rooftop spot than before at a cost of over $10,000, and
faculty and student members together cleaned and renovated the
shack, and the old transceiver equipment was replaced. We
also pulled in Ethernet cabling for Internet, and got a
computer (w9bgx.nuars.nwu.edu).
We are currently looking into holding a course in the
Department of Electrical Engineering which will use the
resources of the Amateur Radio club, and hope it will increase
student participation.

call sign that the club had was 3KZ. When they switched to the W
calls, we were W3ABT. In the 70's, when you could request a call,
we got N3KZ to get the old 3KZ back.

HISTORY
W2SZ was originally created as 2SZ by the Troy YMCA around 1910. It
was turned over to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1917 where
it has been providing services to its members and the community
ever since.
The station provides Amateurs with an opportunity to keep in contact
with friends at home as well as providing for the learning of radio
and basic electronics. The station also provides a friendly and
relaxed atmosphere where members can come to get away from the
stress of classes and work.
W2SZ, known to members are Zed, is a friendly group of people that
are willing to share their knowledge and help those who have an
interest in ham radio to get, or advance, their license. In addition
they are willing to share their knowledge in the proper maintenance
and operation of both club and personal equipment.
The club currently consists of about 30 members and is located at
Six Sunset Terrace, Troy, NY. It also has contact with many of the
past members who have long since graduated from RPI, or community
members who live in the Troy area. It provides the members with
many contacts, and also provides the community with a viable method
of communication through the repeaters that the club has. In
addition to day to day communications, W2SZ also offers lines of
communication during periods of crisis. Examples of the Club's
community involvement were during the San Francisco earthquake,
and during Operation Desert Storm.

Formed at some time around 1930, but known to be in operation by 1936 as the
"Radio Club," encompassing both amateur and broadcast interests. (The
University of Rhode Island was previously known as the Rhode Island State
College until the 1950s.) Members played an active role in the founding of one
of the original eleven college broadcast radio stations, now WRIU-FM.
Civil defense commitments have included operations during the Great Hurricane
of 1938 and Hurricane Carol of 1954, in addition to numerous other situations.
At various times, the club has done work in earth-moon-earth, satellite,
microwave, and similarly exotic modes. URI ARC was among the first stations in
New England to use packet radio.
Located for many years in Lippitt Hall, the club station was relocated to the
top floor of the Taft Experimental Laboratory in 1986. Taft antedates the
university itself by several years, having been built in 1889 to house the old
agricultural experiment station which previously occupied the site of the
Kingston Campus.
The W1KMV club station license was allowed to lapse, but was renewed by special
FCC permission in 1982. Trustees for W1KMV since the renewal have included
Wilson Lamb, K4OGP (now N5LFB?), and Prof. Ralph England, WA1YDR.

HISTORY
Herman Moench started our station in 1933
this is some more data about W9NAA, the rose tech radio club at rose hulman
institute of technology. I was there from 1974 to 1978 (EE '78).
Unfortunately, Herman Moench (W9NZH) died a few years ago -- he was the
living history book of Rose having graduated in 1929 (or 26, i don't have the
alumni notes here at the office) and then returned to teach in 1931 or 1932,
i think. Herman officially retired in 1978 from his position as Vice-President
but continued to work with Rose and other organizations up to his death.
The predecessor to the Rose Tech Radio Club turned into Radio Station WBOW (I
don't know if the broadcaster is still on the air under that call sign or not).
In the mid-1970's, the radio club equipment consisted of a Central Electronics
100V transmitter, a Collins 75A-4 receiver, a model 28 Teletype, a tape reader
and a tape punch (forget the model numbers..), a solid state terminal unit, a
Regency HR-2B FM transceiver. Antennas were an 11-element 2 meter beam, a
3-element yagi and dipoles for 40 and 80 suspended between the school's water
tower and the power plant smokestack (about 125-150 feet up). Also a Heathkit
SB-200 linear amplifier was available.
The station was located on the east side of the main building (now called
Moench Hall) at ground level next to classroom C-126, the machine shop and the
psychology department's "Rat Lab". The station was a small room large enough
for about 3-4 people to be in at once and had an extra wide door to accomodate
equipment and people. The north wall had the equipment bench and shelves and
there was a window to the outside and a window to the world on the inside so
passersby could heckle the operators. Equipment line up was TTY, linear,
receiver, transmitter, 2m radio. The RTTY TU, TD, and reperf was on the upper
shelf. There was some space on the end of the bench where people could work
while someone else was operating. (I want to say the room was about 14' by
8' but I'm not sure.)
Usually twice a year, we would have station cleaning days. Everything would be
removed, the shack cleaned, stuff identified, junk disposed of, and everything
put back into place in working condition. W9NZH would invite everyone out to
his place for a cookout afterwards.
During the 1977-1978 year, Tim Daniel (ex-N8RK, currently in Singapore working
for DEC) Kevin Anderson (WD9FRS at the time) and Paul Schmidt (K9PS) were
instrumental in selling the student government on the idea that new equipment
was needed to refurbish the ham shack. The CE 100V and Collins 75A-4 were
replaced by a Drake R-4C and TX-4C that I understand was in service for 10
years. I believe they now have something newer (like a TS-430/440 or so..).
The station was also relocated in the 1980's when Moench Hall was completely
renovated and is now located off the main hallway near the front of the
building.
During my senior year, the club was very active in events and public service.
Several operating events were held (such as fox hunts) and the station was a
major net control station for the snow emergency net that year (helps to have
that 80m dipole up in the clear...8) ). We made trips to area hamfests part of
the club's activities including attending Dayton.
The Rose Tech Radio Club still today hosts meetings of the Wabash Valley
Amateur Radio Club and holds radio classes for the public interested in
getting their ham license.

Presently we have a decent station with Drake HF gear, a Heath 2KW
linear, driving a 7el beam up about 30ft above rooftop. Also an all
mode Icom on 2m. A 2m repeater on 147.285 recently moved to the top
of a 12 story dorm which now gives us decent coverage of the st.
louis and adjacent Ill. areas. There is talk of getting active on
packet radio with a TCP/IP gateway to the internet. Also some
experimentation with 10GHz microwave.

We have a club call W0QEV that has been ours at least since 1947
which is the oldest log that we can find. The league claims that
we have been affiliated with them since 1949 which makes us one
of the older if not oldest club station in the zero call region.
This far back though and nobody really knows. Someday we will have
to search though old call books from just after the war to see just
when that call appears.
The club started as part of the department of electrical engineering
here. It became a student union organization around a decade ago and
as a result has a steady source of funds. As far as membership, if
only that was as steady as funding. The club has students,
graduate students, professors, university staff and even alumni.
Probably around 20 members but only half that many are easy to
get a hold of. There are always to few undergrads!
An addendum to the above. After the war st. louis became part of
the zero district as opposed to the old nine district. We have
reason to believe that the club was around even before the war,
but don't know under which call or how we can research this.
The ARRL doesn't know and the fcc doesn't even bother with this
type of stuff.
