When I bring up the subject on the local repeater, I get some "questioning"
tones of voices. Something akin to, "you really want to buy a Ten Tec?" One
guy even told me, "Ten Tec isn't inexpensive, it's cheap!"
The Ten Tecs I've heard on the air sound very good. What have your
experiences been?
Thanks,
Steve/AA7FL
I have a 12 year old Corsair and I got rid of a new TS-440sat a couple
years ago because there was simply no comparison in the receiver
quality.
Those guys probably never even seen a Ten Tec, and I bet you a steak
dinner, when their Kenwood, Icom, or Yasue breaks, it gets shipped out
for repair.
Look, everyone makes a pretty good radio for any given "x" amount of
dollars. The Omni V has a superlative receiver but few of the bells and
whistles (including general coverage) that virtually every other
manufacturer builds in as standard equipment.

I have an OMNI VI, so the bells and whistles comment doesn't apply (it has
them), but the receiver comment does. I bought it for the receiver
quality. When I want to listen to shortwave broadcasts, I'll buy a
shortwave receiver.

I'm not one to flame Steve, but he was asking about the Omni V, not the
Omni IV which, as any TenTec head knows, has a lot of DSP toys, so your
comment doesn't apply. I agree, if I want CG, I'll buy a Sony 2010.

Steve,
Let me add this:
In the 8 to 10 years that I have had TenTec gear, I have never had to
send it in to be repaired.
Only twice have I ever had any kind of problem. Both times I called
TenTec and told them what the symtoms were. They sent me some parts and
told me what to replace. Both times I was able to fix the radio
(an Omni, BTW). They never did charge me for the parts.

In addition to the responses on the net, I received about 18 e-mail
messages.
ALL of them were very positive about the OMNI V (and Ten Tec gear in
general). Thanks for the input. It's all benn very helpful.
BTW, several hams told me that they owned several rigs and ended up selling
the others because they were spoiled by the Ten Tec. The closest I received
to an endorsement of another manufacturer's rig was by someone who said
that the 930S came closest to performing as well as the Omni V.

I did indeed say that the bells & whistles part of the OMNI VI doesn't apply
to the discussion, Paul. But the receiver quality between the V and the VI
is basically the same -- DSP has nothing to do with that. The point is that
the OMNI V (and VI) are some of the best basic receiver designs around, IF
you can satisfy your SW needs with the Sony.
