I am thinking of building a 2m or possibly 2m & 70cm amp.

How difficult is this task going to be and where should I start to look
for help.

I have some electronics bulding/soldering experience and would just like
to build a piece of my own equipment...

Thanks.

You can get a good start buy getting a copy of the ARRL Handbook, a copy of
the ARRL UHF/Microwave Experimenters Manual and a copy of the ARRL
UHF/Microwave Projects Manuals (Volumes 1 and 2). All three of these books
have good design and construction info in them.

I would also suggest that you check out the following URL's too for ideas.

For tube amps ...

Good design article for screen and control grid power supplies.
I would read through his material BEFORE building anything.

Same sample 50Mhz amplifiers.

Good for tube data sheets.

Super design article for a 2M amp!!

Good general design points.

http://duncanamps.simplenet.com/technical/technical.html (May find something
useful.)

Source for Plate Power Supply transformers.
The price maybe high, but at least you can get one if you
can't get it anywhere else.

Source for tubes and other amplifier parts.

Now If you want solid state ...

http://www.ibelings.com/n4ip/mrf157.html (Sample 1KW wideband amp to 6M)

Good source for transistors.
The test circuits serve very well as the base for a complete amplifier.
These
test circuits also include a parts list and PCB artwork too!!

You can call Motorola and use their fax back service to order the following
application notes which you will find useful.

AN-791 "A Simplified Approach to VHF Power Amplifier Design"
AN955 "A Cost Effective VHF Amplifier for Land Mobile Radios"
AN1037 "Solid State Power Amplifier 300W FM 88-108 MHz"

Good Luck
