Marine battery in UPS?

I was given an older 550VA UPS. The batteries have pretty much lived out
their useful life and need to be replaced. Could I just put in a deep-cycle
marine battery? The box has enough space for one.

Chris,

That's an excellent idea. Because the UPS could be used as an inverter
for your station, powering items that will not run on 12V, you could add
a *FEW* batteries in parallel, and have a station that will stay powered
during the longest power outage. Calculate your average ah usage during
an average day, and current limit a trickle charge circuit delivering 5%
overcharge, and you'll always have topped off batteries in the event of
an extended need.

Depending on the UPS, if you intend to operate the unit for more than 5 min @
a time get a 12 volt DC fan and point it at the switching transistors. A UPS is
a
short term power supply and was never intended to run for an extended period
of time on the battery. I have a APC 520 ES on my computer and the thing would

have a short life indeed if run for a long time. Very poor air circulation.

One caveat, the marine batteries are
the marine batteries desiigned to vent
to the atmosphere as a car battery would?
Take in consideration safety hazards if
hydrogen gas buildup is a problem.
