Does anyone have any info on the cable required for connecting an ADI
AT-600 to a serial port and/or the programming protocol? Is there a
free program available for programming the AT-600? ADI sells a
programming kit for $40, but I'd thought I'd explore other
alternatives.

I have a Mac, and also wondered what the exact protocols were, since they
don't offer Mac software to program it.

I suppose someone would have to buy the software and cable and then
capture the data stream to see what's going on.

It's worth the money to just buy the kit...the DB9 RS-232 plug contains
surface mount level changing circuitry and wouldn't be particularly easy
to duplicate.

I'd also say the data stream is inherently copyrighted as it is canned
in the radio's firmware and -that- is copyrighted. Don't know about
using it just for yourself, however.

I just picked up the programming kit today. It performs as advertised.
However, since I am a software developer, I immediately wanted
something more <g>. Also, I was a little suprised to see that the
cable connects to only one radio port (mic or speaker) at a time. The
drawing in the manual shows the cable connecting to both.

Well, I have a Windows 95 emulator for the ol' Mac, so I guess I'll have
to pick me up a kit and run it that way, if it works well like you say.
Beats punching in all the freqs and alphanumerics with the keypad.

You know, if I knew in advance that a manufacturer had
pulled a BS stunt like putting a 'copyrighted' message
in a programming data stream to prevent someone
(ie a third party) from developing peripherals, I'd
absolutely refuse to buy the radio. If I found out after they
had my money, I'd scream bloody murder at them.

That's BS!

As to being 'copyrightable' and restricted, I don't know that
it's legally defensable. I mean. IBM put "Copyright IBM"
in their BIOS extension ROMs. And it's not common
practice that 3rd parties put somthing like the phase "Some
programs expect Copyright IBM here" or similar in their
ROMs so that the "Copyright IBM" sits in exactly the same
place.

Personally, become a well informed consumer, and KNOW
what your buying. If you run into BS like this, and you don't
like it, BITCH! Sometimes companies DO listen. Years
ago I called Burger King objecting to the ads with the 'sometimes
you gotta break the rules'. I also got friends to call after posting
on CIS. The ads got pulled, and BK issued a 'statement'.

You CAN make a difference!
