Thanks!
Hummmm, I don't know all the details, but I think the mk2 had more power
on 2m than the original 706. I believe both the first two models had 6
and 2m both, but the first version had a fairly low power on 2m. The mk2
increased the power on 2m to I belive 20-25 watts from 10. "guessing
there". The mk2g has 440 mhz which neither of the first two had, and
also even more power on 2m. The "g" has 100w on 6m, 50w on 2m, and 20w
on 70cm. Also the receiver range goes up to about 500 mhz on the "g".
Also, most people seem to think the menus a bit easier, and better audio
quality on the "g". I know myself, I can tell quite a difference in the
audio between a 706mk1, and a "g". To me, the "g" sounds cleaner and
crisper with less "pinchyness". You might look for rig reviews on Eham.
"I think thats the name of the website". Obviously, the "g" seems to
have the most features, and a more fully refined model of the original
706. I just ordered one myself a couple of days ago. "706mk2g" Eagerly
awaiting Mr. Postman....They are on sale right now with a 150.00 rebate.
I found one for 899.99. Not too bad considering they were well over a
1000 not too long ago. I'm sure others could fill in more details on the
earlier versions. I'm most familiar with the "g" being I've been
studying it lately. I'm sure it's a compromise rig compared to the
bigger ones, but it will be neat to have longwave thru 500 mhz in one
dinky box. I bought it mainly for mobile/portable, but will use it in
the house also a good bit I'm sure. There is plenty of info on the "g",
at the icom website. I don't think they list the earlier models, so you
would have to just search around the net for the others. MK
