While this is not a RADIO, it is the type of toy that amateurs
would, and probably have, enjoyed.

I have an 'Atom Smasher' that I got for christmas when I was about 10
(that was about 35 years ago). It is a 10" Van de Graf generator that
was sold by Lafayette Electronics in the early sixties. I am interested
in hearing from anyone who has owned or does own one.

The one I have still works great. But I need a new rubber belt for it. I
tried a 5/8" x 7" pale crepe rubber band, but it is too long...I have to
elevate the tube by hand to place enough tension on the belt to
get the motor to drive it. Anyone know where I can find a 5/8"
x 5" pale crepe rubber band to try?

Hi Perry -

I have one of those old "Atom Smashers." You can shorten the rubber
band using an old trick we used with the drive belt on cassette
machines.

Carefully cut the rubber band and then lay one-end over the other with
an overlap. Make a diagonal cut with a sharp razor blade through both
ends of the rubber band at a point which gives you the length you
need.

Now carefully "crazy glue" the two ends together.

Does anyone have the instructions for the atom
Smasher? I bought one recently with no operating manual.

In the 17 years since this was posted, he likely found a rubber band.

Even if he did, it is likely in shreds once again.

Perhaps, but he would know where to get a second one...

Assuming the same place still has them 10 years later.

And assuming that the OP didn't graduate from one form of "home atom
smasher" (Van de Graf generator) to another (Farnsworth Fusor) and
cook himself to a cheery blue glow.

Virutally the only people posting these days in the rec.radioa.amateur.*
hierarchy is people replying to old messages. For some reason, they find
the old messages, but never bother to actually participate in the
newsgroup.

Of course, there is also the endless spew from the "dictators" of the
hierarchy, those self appointed idiots who think dumping blog postings to
newsgroups is a good thing.

Do not have the instructions, do know a bit about the product in general
though..

You brought back a memory.. Good one at that.. When I took Physics the
Professor wanted a voulenteer to hook up to the Van de Graf generator
for a demonstration... Being about the only student in the class who had
read up on them (Years earlier) I was the "Victim".. So I got up and put
my hand firmly on the dome, He filpped the switch and charged me up..
Hair standing on end like the mad scientist in the movies.

The class Clown piped up with "Now what do you do" I replied, Why I come
up and shake your hand.. Three things happened.

1: Broke up the class with laughter
2: Class clown suddenly was very very lonely as students "Shifted" their
seats away from him
3: Teacher siliently said "DO not uncouple from dome" and I indicated,
also silently, that I did not plan on it.

Normally... I am no where near that fast with a comeback for that type
of jerk. But that Day.. I RULED!!!
