I found the mod for the TS-140S, snipping diodes 29 and 31.
Fine, so I think diode 31 gives you more power on all the bands
because i did that first. Then I snipped 29 and reset and checked
it out. It added 45Mhz-60Mhz to my receive, except for one little
problem. When listing between 45-60Mhz, the display goes blank
(except for dots), and it does Morse code that says "unlock". I
checked the service manual and the normal manual and this is a
"feature". It turns out that the processors catches the fact that it is
recieving out of the allowable area and immediatly shuts down
the reciever volume. Well i don't call that much of a mod.

So how can i actually LISTEN to stuff from 45-60Mhz? Also, It
now transmits from 49 to 55Mhz, but that is not so usefull as i'm
interested in getting it to work on 47.xx Mhz (Red Cross Freq).

If anyone can shed light on how to trick the processor into thinking
it's not out of band, so that i can actually listen, or if i've done the
wrong mod....Or if there is another mod... i would be very greatful
for this information. I've searched the WWW endlessly, and other
than a short note of some guy telling another to snip D29 and D31,
I've come up with nothing substantial...Let me know if you have
anything that might be of help.

Tony,
It turns out I got an "athoritative" response from Kenwood, which
is:

Sorry, the only MARS CAP modifications we have for the TS-140S is to allow you
to transmit and receive from .5 - 30 MHz. We know of no TX/RX mod to go
out of this range.

Hi Tony,

The reason for the TS-140S indicating dots is this
indicates PLL unlock.
The TS-140 does not have the PLL circuitry for
this to ever work for you and it is missing the Final
unit for it to transmit on this freq. The unit does
have some of the same control circuitry as the TS-680
which does work on 6 meters.
