Subject: Jeep Cherokee engine noise
I have an 1989 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 and an Alinco DX-70TH with two mag mount
antennas. One is for the HF side and the other for 6M.
I am getting alot of engine and computer noise into the unit through the
antennas.
It is not coming in through the power, no AC whine.
On 6M I am getting about an S6 of noise on SSB and about the same on 10M.
As I work down in frequency the interference decreases, and almost
completely goes away at about 75M.
I have changed the wires and plugs, have rerouted the power, have tried
grounding every thing.
Anyone out have this problem or possibly have a cure? And, yes I do
realize that getting rid of the old Jeep and getting something newer would
probably solve the problem, however, that is not an option at this time.
So, please....
Thank you,

Regrounding *everything* is always important on the Cherokee. It is painted
before assembly and many parts will not have good electrical connection.
On mine, the horn wouldn't even blow until I sanded paint from mating
surfaces.
That said, the best way to cure electrical interference is always to treat it
at the *source*. That means you need to locate the exact sources of the
noise you are experiencing and then treat them there. If the engine control
computer is a source of noise, suppress it *at the computer*. If the noise
is due to the fuel injectors, suppress it *at the injectors*. Etc. Use a small
"sniffer" loop on the end of a piece of coax to identify the noise sources
and use standard suppression techniques to deal with them right at the
source. You can chase your tail for months trying generic solutions. Be
systematic and solve the noise problems directly at their source and
you'll have a quieter vehicle, and in less time.

Subject: Make Money With Your Computer!
E-Mail Your Way To Riches!
Dear Friend,
We all know E-mail is here to stay. It's fun, easy and exciting! Would you be
interested if we could show you a way to make well over $1,000 per week doing it?
This is not a joke. You may have seen many people trying to tell you that you
can make money by joining this or that scheme! Guess what, you decide to
go for it and then you get nothing but frustration and disappointment! We
are here to take your frustration and disappointment into an Electrifying
Adventure!
We have been marketing on-line for almost 2 years now! We have never spent
one red penny on advertising and made nothing but profits. We can show you
how to make money every day of the year. Many people may think this is untrue
or it just can't be done. We are here to tell you that it is absolutely not true. The
biggest mistake people make about marketing on-line is that they sit and wait
for people to contact them. You will never make it if this is your approach and
we'll tell you why. There are over 60 MILLION people on-line right now, and
seven new people logging on every minute of the day world-wide and everyone
is offering something. So how do you get a potential client or a new customer
before your competition does? The answer is simply " Creative E-mailing" and
it WORKS! I'll tell you why. You're taking your product, service or idea directly
to the market instead of waiting for the market to come to you!
Here are a few testimonials we'd like to share with you ( They're all 100% TRUE! ):
Internet Communications, my wife and I owe you so much. We ordered your
Creative E-mail System and within the first week we received over $1,150 in
orders for my Internet Consulting business!
--Charles -- California
I have bought two so-called E-mail programs that cost me over $600.00 when
I received them. They were extremely difficult to operate and it took me about
two weeks to figure them out. Once I did, they were so time consuming it just
wasn't worth my time. When I received your course it took me about four
minutes to install and I was in business! Within the first 24 hours of my first
E-mailing I received over $580.00 in sales over the phone. That first week I
grossed over $2,000.00! I really can't believe how easy you made this,
anyone can do it! Thanks!
--Dennis -- Illinios
Hello, I'm a divorced mother of two children. I wanted to thank you for helping
me out. This was my first time buying anything on the Internet. I was skeptical
at first but I figured I'd take a chance. This was the best chance I've ever took!
My part-time business is now a full-time home-business, thanks to your
Creative E-mail System. I had to hire my two family members to help me out!
This is GREAT, thanks so much! I'd recommend this for anyone!
--Ellen -- Florida
You may have seen other people offering products "E-mail Programs, E-mail
Addresses, Extractors, Etc." The vast majority of these products are very
over-priced and very difficult to even use. None of them even supply you
with current, up-to-date, FRESH & RESPONSIVE E-mail addresses! Our
Creative E-mail System puts everything into one package to make your
profits soar immediately! Even if you do not have a product or service to offer,
we are going to give you over 500 how-to reports that you will have full reprint
rights to! What makes our course different from anything else being offered
anywhere is that we're dedicated to your success! We do not succeed unless
you succeed! All of our E-mail Address Databases are created in house. We
do not trade our databases with anyone because people are selling extremely
bad lists on the Internet. Many of other people's databases are filled with
duplicate addresses and many of them are undeliverable. We keep our own
database so we know exactly what we have and we keep nothing but the best.
There's no other way. We believe in producing high quality products that
should be priced reasonably for your success! Read on to see the special
bonuses you will receive.
******** SPECIAL 10 DAY BONUS ********
If you order within the next 10 days we will include:
1) 500 How-To Reports ( You may resell these at any price )
2) Your Personal Complete Guide To The Internet -- This 175 page e-book covers
every single aspect of the internet. You will never have to buy another internet
book! When you complete this book, you will know more about the internet
than 90% of the people online right now.
3) When you purchase our 8 MILLION SUPER responsive E-mail list we will
include Mega-Mailer. It sends 250,000 E-mails per hour! All other orders will
receive Pegasus Mail. It mails about 30,000 per hour.
Here's how to get the Creative E-Mail System:
All orders are delivered on CD-ROM or 100mb Zip Disk ( Iomega ).
============> E-Mail Databases <================
2 Million FRESH E-mail Addresses only $ 99.95
4 Million FRESH E-mail Addresses only $179.95
6 Million FRESH E-mail Addresses only $249.95
8 Million FRESH E-mail Addresses only $299.95
You will be sending your Marketing Letter to 2, 4, 6 or 8 MILLION People! To
mail to 2 MILLION People by U.S. Mail at $.32 per stamp would cost
$640,000.00, not including envelopes or paper! The price of 2 MILLION E-mail
Addresses isn't even a fraction of the cost. And the great thing is that if you
have 10 products, you can E-mail to your list as many times as you want to!
Your profits will never stop soaring! Don't pay someone else to send your
advertisement out, do it yourself and save big money! The average cost right
now to send your ad one time to ONE MILLION people is $1,400.00. You can
send it 100 times to EIGHT MILLION people for only $299.95 and that
includes Mega-Mailer that sends 250,000 per hour!

WALTER! I have had 3ea. T-368's and 1 spare parts radio. I paid
$600. for the 1st one about 7 years ago and another 5 years ago for
$900., and a new one in the wooden crate about the same time $1200.
I traded one, (a used one this year) for a broadcast staion radio that
is worth at least $2000. For the ones that I have seen, they go all
over the place. I have my (parts only) radio for sale at $400.
Hope this helps some, Regards, ARTHUR KC6KUK . . .

It's been reported several times in these newsgroups that HeathKit _still_

Allen, Most likely cause are the filter caps located near the power
input. I have heard that these 2510s are rather underrated in the
electrolytic cap area. The ratings on these are only 16 volts and
convention says at least one and half times the expected voltage. I
would recomend changing out any electrolytic with a better value for
voltage say of 25 volts. The 16 volt ones are pretty over worked and then
letting them sit dried them out.

Well if you made your stocking purchases on the strong Yen, likely
you could not stand the loss of dropping your selling price when the
actual value of the product was less under a weak Yen to Dollar ratio.

I just retired as production manager of the local daily paper, where
among other things I was responsible for operation/maintenance of all
computer systems - consisting of about 50 PCs and about 20 Macs. We
*NEVER* turned them off, but did run screen savers on many of the color
monitors. These sets would typically run about 5 years between failures,
and most failures were cooling fans - followed by keyboards and monitors,
then hard drives - in that order.
I think the key rule for an individual user would be that if your
computer is used an hour or so EVERY DAY, it would be best to just leave
it on - but some sort of surge protector is recommended. In this
scenario, I would also leave the monitor on, but use a screen saver to
even out wear and tear on screen coatings. There are mixed
recommendations on merely turning down the contrast to darken the screen.
Oh yeah, by the way, those few computers in our business that WERE turned
off regularly, failed MORE OFTEN than those left on continuously...

Subject: FT-50RD OR AT-600
I don't know anything about the "AT600" but do have an FT50. Although
the FT50 seemed like a radio packed with abilities, I have found Yaesu
service and the RF section (UHF) of the FT50 to be poor. I had an FT40
(UHF only version) and had the same problems. The majority, I now have
discovered, of FT50s have a problem when transmitting at the higher
power levels on UHF. There is an RF problem that causes the radio to
emit static sounding noise on the transmitted signal. This problem does
not normally happen at the lower power levels, nor does it happen when
transmitting into a dummy load or external antenna. After buying my
radio on February 17th of this year, I have just received it back from
Yaesu last monday from it's second trip to them for repair of this
annoying problem. And, just like my first FT40, it still has the
problem.
The real problem is that Yaesu is VERY MUCH AWARE of this design
problem, they even have a service bulletin to "reduce the problem",
note, not remove the problem, but, REDUCE the proble.
This repair is nothing more than a piece of copper tape placed over the
UHF Power module and a mini spring (thats right, a mechanical spring)
wedged between the outer case and a shield cover. This repair may work
on some, but not all FT50Rs. This combined with not having a radio more
than 6 days over three months ownership leaves a bad taste in my mouth
for Yaesu. My radio sat in a "black hole" for three weeks waiting for a
Quality Control check by the service manager as it was a "second
return".
The service manager was on vacation, later defined as sick leave (after
5th phone call), and when he returned and signed it off, it came back as
bad or worse than when it left. Then when I call to complain to the
service manager, seems he died! Seems nobody else can now make a
decision. I suspect that with Radio in hand and a personnal visit to the
Yaesu booth at Dayton, and a loud voice, I might get some satisfaction,
if not a new replacement.
Now, before all the FT50 lovers get really pissed off, the radio if it
worked, a very nice, greatly modifiable unit, and I truly looked forward
to having one. The programming software for the unit makes it "easier"
to program than by keypad, but is full of flaws and it's design can
never be accused of copying someone like Motorola software. And, as I
have now found, in 9 out of 11 FT50s in the area, the UHF noise problem
was there but the owners had never noticed as they are normally talking
on repeaters that are somewhat noisy anyway. The main selling point for
me was the ability of the radio to do Digital Coded Squelch, and the
noise problem sometimes causes a problem when using this system.
All I would suggest is that you immediately test the unit, before
purchase if able, for this problem. If you can get one from the start
without the problem, you would be very happy with it.

Subject: HELP! CES *T.T. Mike...
Can you help??
I have a CES (Winter Park, FL.) 700L *Touch-Tone Microphone.
**Do you have the Color Code for this Mike??
The Mike now has a connector for a GE-MVS series radio.
I contacted the company but they want $25 for a photocopy of the
manual! At present the mike has a 8-pin Molex connector for GE~MVS.
I would like to convert the Mike it to work on a KENWOOD UHF Radio.
The Kenwood has a connector that looks like a modular telephone
connector (only more pins)... I plan to build a junction box.
I HAVE data for the Kenwood Mike Connector, but I need data for the
CES Mike!... While I would like to convert to a official CES Mike
Cable for Kenwood, the cost is another $25! Plus, CES advised that
the Mike would require modifications.
Any help with this project will be greatly appreciated! Any help with
the switch on the back of the Mike, "AUTO" / "MANUAL"?
Many thanks!

I would like to connect my computer to my IC-706 transceiver, but I
need the cable to connect the computer to the radio. MFJ sells the
MFJ-5383i cable for $49.95, but I'd rather build my own cable.
(1) Can anyone direct me toward a schematic/wiring diagram for doing
so? and (2) I prefer to connect the cable to my serial port; does the
MFJ cable connect to the serial port or the parallel port? If I must
use the parallel port, I will.

Richard gives some good tips on tracking and fixing mobile noise.
Let me just add a note on how to build a sniffer probe. Take a piece
of coax, 20 or 30 feet long so it can reach all parts of the vehicle when
connected to the radio, skin back and expose about 3 inches of the
inner conductor, form a loop and solder the end of the exposed inner
to the braid. This is your sniffer. When you bring it close to a noise
source, you'll hear it in the radio. The small loop will only strongly
pick up signals when it is very close to them.
Of course as Richard suggests, test the radio with no antenna first.
If you have noise then, it is coming in the power wiring. Richard's
suggestion to go straight to the battery (with both leads) is a good
one for dealing with this.

Hi All..
I was mucking around with my ft-26 hand held radio last night when
I stumbled across a way to get it to recieve from 130MHz to 174MHz.
It's simple:
1. Turn the radio off.
2. Turn it back on again while holding down BOTH the up and down arrow keys.
That's it! The set will now tune from 130 to 174MHz on receive!
If you try and transmit outside the ham band the disply say's "err", so
there's no worries about out of band tranmitions.
Good luck!
Graeme.....

Well if you made your stocking purchases on the strong Yen, likely
you could not stand the loss of dropping your selling price when the
actual value of the product was less under a weak Yen to dollar ratio.
I suspect that is what is happening.
I am sure most Amateur companies do not particapte in price protection

The radio uses Icom's CI-V buss architecture. This is a party line buss
driven by OC drivers at TTL levels, IE it's sort of like ethernet. Icom sells
an interface which can break that out to RS232 serial, but it isn't cheap.
For controlling a single radio (the buss can control several, all daisy chained),
you can build a circuit to convert to RS232 levels and split Txd and Rxd for the
serial link. This circuit is a couple of transistors and a diode. MFJ builds this
into the cable. You can wire it up on a piece of perf board tucked inside the
DB connector of a homemade cable.
The circuit is included in the documentation for several of the shareware and
freeware programs you can use to control the radio.

Gary,
Thanks for the reply, but I'm still unable to find any useful info.
I've downloaded John Hansen's (WA0PTV) radio control program, but
there are no plans to build the cable...he only recommends purchasing
the MFJ cable. Subsequently, I found a small circuit which converts
the RS-232 voltages to TTL levels and back; however, the circuit is
somewhat illegible and the broader context for its use is not
described (i.e. how does it get inserted in the cable between the comm
port and the XCVR port?) BTW, I found this at
http://www.synapse.net/~kentrol/ under the "PC Interfaces" menu,
"Level Translators" paragraph, "schematics" hypertext keyword in
paragraph.
I also noticed that the program I have will not work with Win 3.11,
which is what I have loaded on my notebook computer.
So at this point, I still need a circuit schematic, wiring diagram,
and additionally, the names/sources of some additional
shareware/freeware control programs (for both Win 3.1 and Win 95).
Sorry to pester...but please help...
Many thanks...
Best Wishes,
Rich

Subject: What is a FT 767GX worth???
I am about to buy my fourth FT 767GX. I have one, but have a chance to
buy a second one. The problem is, I don't know what they are worth.
All of mine have been purchased new. I had two damaged by lightning, so
actually the insurance company paid to replace them.
There is a ham in my town that has one for sale. It's lithium battery
has to be replaced. Apparently he spoked, so there is a great deal of
grime from the smoke on the knobs and face plate. He lived near the
ocean in an un-aircondtioned shack and so screws and knobs seem to have
suffered from the corrosion.
It is missing two of the side or end feet, but other wise seems to work
okay. It has a two meter module that also appears to work okay.
So the question remains. What is it worth?
I look forward to hearing from as many as possible.
Regards, Terry

Subject: Which HT to start with?
I have just recently (yesterday) passed my technician exam and am looking for a
good, inexpensive HT with which to start. When I say inexpensive, I
mean anything around $200. I live in Raleigh, NC, and have found two stores
close by that carry radio equipment and who also have web sites. Here are the
models I am considering (in order as listed). They all have CTCSS
encode/decode, and all the other std. options needed in a HT.
1) ICOM IC-T2A, $199. I am impressed with the features of this radio for the
price. It has the widest TX (140-150MHz) and RX (136-174MHz) of any radio
listed here.
2) Kenwood TH-235A, $189. This is the lowest priced radio listed, but is
narrow on the TX range (144-148MHz). I have talked to a couple of hams who
don't care for the Kenwood equipment, but I didn't really get a good reason
why.
3) Alinco DJ-190T, $218. Nice options, but again a narrow TX range
(144-147.995).
4) Yaesu FT-10R/H, $259. This one is a little pricey for me, but has the most
all-around features of any radio listed here. The info I have doesn't list the
TX and RX ranges.
5) Radio Shack HTX-202, $199. Although less expensive than the Alinco and
Yaesu, I haven't seen many of these radios in use. Several hams have told me
to avoid this radio.
Being new to this hobby, I still don't know all the things to look for in a
radio, so I turn to the experts, you who are experienced. Any feedback would
be appreciated. Please email me at ti...@renewal-iis.com with any information
about the above radios, or possibly another model I haven't listed in my price
range. Also, if anyone in the Raleigh area reads this and has a used HT for
sale, email me with the info.
Thanks!
Tim Nicholson, callsign un-issued at this time.

Yes, this errormessage is well-documented.
But I bought my HTX-202 in 1994, and have NEVER run into that problem
using either the standard rubber duckie or even a Diamond RX-77CA
antenna (the 15" one) on a portable 12VDC power source (usually a
Quantum HAM Battery).
So...although a "well-documented" errormessage...has it REALLY occurred
to anyone who has purchased a *NEW* HTX-202 since, say, 1994???
Or is this a problem unique to older models only?

Subject: EIMAC 3-500Z QUESTION PLEASE
I recently purchased two brand new Eimac 3-500Z tubes. Great price,
however, the tubes have been boxed and sitting on the shelf for a long
time. I suspect, based on the tube serial numbers, since 1970.
Physcially they look great and new.
Three respected local engineers and technicians suggested that I install
the tubes and run them on filiment only for a minimum of 1 to a maximum
of 6 hours before applying plate voltage. One suggested without the
caps; the other said it did not matter. Filiment glows should be evenly
matched.
It has been suggested that there is a possibility of vacuum leak by
virtue of the tubes sitting for so long, although it is a remote
possibility.
Was curious if any of you have had experiences with tubes of this nature
that were new, but sitting around for long long periods. Any other
suggestion you might add would be appreciated. Thanks.
PS The tubes will be used in the Kenwood Tl-922A linear. 73 MG

that I need is the ability to Xmit on the marine band. Does anyone
know if this is possible with this radio.
Thanks.

Note: The coil (T201) for the BS-5 shows to be discontinued so it may
not be possible to convert an BS-8 to a BS-5 but the coil for BS-8 is
available so coverting from a BS-5 to a BS-8 is possible.

Hi,
I bought a KWD TH-78E about 3 years ago in England.
It had only 144-145 Mhz and 430-440 Mhz range but the
salesman gave me a combination of keys which enlarges
the recieve range. Now I just can't remember this combination.
If anybody knows please send me an E-mail.
Tnx a lot,

They are morons, unfortunately. Do not ask them for advice in the
future, because they don't have any idea what they're talking about.
The HTX-202 - the world's most popular 2-Meter HT - is a solid
performer. Your "friends" might not like the fact that is doesn't
receive cellular phone calls or transmit illegally or have 1,000 memory
channels. But if you want a solid, reliable, proven 2-Meter HT, the
HTX-202 is an excellent piece of equipment.

I personally own one of these and have never had a problem with it. I'm
not sure why people have told you to avoid it. There are only two issues I
have with this radio. 1) Error-2. If you run external power (i.e. car
lighter plug, power supply) you can not use the rubber duck antenna. RF
leaks into the PLL and you get an Error-2. The solution is to use an
external antenna. RS tech support comes through again!
2) There are absolutley NO mods around for this radio. I'd like to get
extended recieve on my HT, because my local fire department is on 154MHz.
But alas, there is no way to do this on a HTX-202.
I think it's a feature packed, inexpensive radio that's great for a
beginner or old timer without a lot of money. It looks like a brick (and
feels like one too!) which is why many people prefer other radios, but
technically it's very sound.
BTW: Why would you want to transmit outside of 144-148?

Dear TMV7 users,
Playing around with the Kenw. TMV7 I was paticulary fond of the remote
control option of the rig.
You can change a lot of things from VFO freq. to CTCSS from your HT and
there is an option for the rig to
give a confermation beep on the control freq.
It's nice but when changing things you lose tarck of the changed functions
when you are not in the shack.
So the question is:
Does anyone know the TMV7 with the voice unit installed has the option to
awnserback or give
the status of the rig in voice on the control freqency ?
Thanks for the response via email or in the newsgroop

things as a hobby. I also do work for a number of the other Ham Radio

I'm personally very impressed with the 920's features, operation and

Hi Rick:
Im sorry that those that gave you answers, did not post to the
NewsGroup. I have similiar inquiries about the FT1000/d.
It is my understanding that there is a 600 Hertz filter available as
an add-on to the 1000/d. Im not clear if a second 250Hertz at the 3rd
I.F. is included in the 1000/d.
I have this thread marked to watch with Free Agent, but I think I have
missed the info.

Both Radios havew some unique features so it is a hard decision.
The Yaesu has "Dual Out of Band Watch" and the Icom has only duel watch
inside the same band. The Icom has the famous spectrum scope. etc
It is tough. I may wait till QST Magazine does a review of the radio.

This is normal for a neon lamp, it will go out

After a discussion among other hams I thought I'd post a question to
start a discussion of the "best" coax for HF operation.
The opinion should be based on cost, ease of use, signal loss, etc...
The situation involves a run of no more than 100 feet, HF operation only
up to full legal power, possible bury but not necessary.
examples: RG8, RG58, RG213, 9913 etc....
Thanks in advance for your opinions.

Best is relative to your goals, I imagine:-) For the conditions you
specified, I would use RG-213 as being the best compromise between cost
and loss. Avoid the foam dielectric coaxes unless you intend to be
fanatical about sealing the connectors to avoid moisture penetration.
The very low loss Belden 9913 is overkill for HF, less than 100 feet,
and is very susceptable to water penetration. Good stuff on 432, not
needed on 20 Meters.
I feed my 80 meter inverted L with RG-8X from Radio Shack. I had a roll
handy and the ground losses swamp the cable losses, so I used it. If I
had a roll of RG-213 from a good manufacturer (Belden comes to mind), I
would have used it. At the end of the day, you won't be able to tell the
difference on HF between -8X and -213. Pick one that will last in your
installation, meaning UV resistant jacket, non-migrating, and use
quality connectors.

At 50 MHz, 100 feet of RG58U (poly) has a loss of 3.1dB, which isn't a big
deal at HF (loss will be lower at lower frequency), but if that worries you
100 feet of RG213U goes down to 1.6 dB which is pretty good, and RG8U
is 1.2dB. I have run an antenna system on about 30-40m of RG58U
which is thin enough to be very conveniently handled, and used
up to 400W PEP with good results. Burying is an excellent idea for
reducing RF fields on the outside of the coax travelling back to the shack
or house. Open-wire feeder is the best as far as loss is concerned, but much
more awkward to install, susceptible to influence of nearby objects, requires
balanced high-Z feed at the input, requires care to avoid loss increases when
rain gets on the spreaders, requires protection against inadvertent contact.

Yes that is true, but that is the only problem with it and frankly,
not very seriouse. Then there is hardly another one with everything
build in (DTMF code/decode, CTCSS code/decode) and you cannot beat the
price. I have got 2 HTX-202 three years ago and they never let me down
so far. Very reliable and useful for every environment. It gives you
over 10 watts output with external power supply (13.8 V) and is
excellent for mobile and stationary operation as well.

Oh yes! The HTX 202 is a WONDERFUL radio - I espeically love the
"feature" that causes it to key up and transmit an anoying buzzing
noise when the battery dies! - How can anyone promote a radio that

Subject: FT-2500M vs TM-261A vs IC-2000?
I'm looking to buy my first "real" 2M mobile rig - my current one is
an old Icom IC-25H which works great but has very limited capabilities
(5 memories, no CTCSS tone, etc.) - I've narrowed my choices to these
three models and would like to solicit opinions (good and bad) on
each:
Yeasu FT2500M
Icom IC-2000
Kenwood TM-261A
Budget constraints require that I stay under $325 so some of the more
capable and exotic models are out of reach. I've read the literature
on each of these and they seem pretty fairly matched, the main
differences being the number of memories available.
Of these three, which one would you consider to be the "best" for
general mobile and/or base station operation for repeaters and
occasionally packet radio?

I don't know if these problems are related, but, I couldn't use my Radio
Shack speaker/mic with the FT-50 and audio adapter plug on VHF or UHF.
RF was getting back into the radio (via the sp/mic cable), causing
severe audio distortion -and- causing the radio to stay in the transmit
mode after release of the PTT. I soldered 0.0047uF bypass capacitors on
the mic/PTT audio lead and speaker lead to ground inside the audio
adapter plug. That cured the problem. (Hint: I used SMD's, but you
might be able to cram radial leaded ceramic caps. in there). Maybe the
bypass would have been better done -inside- the radio, but I'm not
-that- brave!

Subject: FT-8000R Experience
For anyone who's interested, here's my experience with my new Yaesu
FT-8000R. In short, it's great!
Ordered it and FTS-22 CTCSS decode module on Saturday, May 3 from HRO,
Delaware. HRO's price, BTW, was between $30 and $100 less than anyone
else. CTCSS module arrived Wednesday the 7th, the rig arrived a day
later. CTCSS module was a snap to install, except the instructions did
not mention the plastic insulator you must stick on to prevent the
module connector pins from shorting the surface mount chips below.
Spent most of Thursday evening not doing my chores and playing with the
radio instead. :) Easy to program and blindingly fast scanning.
Installed rig on Saturday. The included power cable was plenty long
enough to reach the battery (well, in my VW at least). Rig fits like a
glove in the center console, but still has plenty of room behind for air
circulation.
Signal reports are great, especially the "clear, natural sounding
audio." Intermod rejection is also excellent, even driving within 100
yds. of a triplet of paging towers on my way to and from work every day.
No ignition noise, no alternator whine, good clean receive audio, and
none of the "slow-squelch" problems mentioned here earlier. Cooling fan
is audible but not obtrusive. The S-meter squelch is neat, too.
About the only thing I miss that my FT-530 has that the 8000R doesn't is
CTCSS decode scanning and direct frequency entry---I have to twiddle the
knob to find an unknown tone or enter a new freq.
The user manual mentions that mods for transmitting in other services
are in the service manual, which I did not buy. Then again, I have no
interest in transimitting out of band or listening to cell phones,
either, although x-mit on 220 band would be fun.
Anyone who's looking for a compact, reasonably priced, extended receive
dual band rig would do well to consider this one. Great radio!

A friend of mine (a brand new ham) inherited an HTX-202 with no manual

functions. Does this thing have CTCSS Encode? If it does, I can't find
out how to set the tone freq. Apparently, it has PL Decode, because
I see where you can turn on/off the Tone Squelch. On my HT
(obviously, not a Radio Shack) Tone Squelch indicates PL Decode is
active. On the HTX-202, I don't see where you turn on The PL Encode
function nor do see where to select the tone to be used. Is there a
menu system? How do you get into it??

To activate ctcss, I think you have to choose the frequency that you have

on the right. Rotate the tuning knob until you get to the tone you want.

Subject: HTX-202 won't transmit
I have an HTX-202 and it has developed a problem where it won't transmit.
(Yes, transmit is enabled. :) I push the PTT button, and the display
changes appropriately for transmitting, but nothing comes out the antenna,
and the "power bars" on the display don't light. The problem has been
intermittant, but has gotten worse. When I open it up, nose around, and
close it up again, sometimes it works.. sometimes not. Suspecting a cold
solder joint at the power transistor, I resoldered those, but the problem
remains.
Any other ideas as to what to look for? I don't want to have to send it
back to RS (though I think if I do I'll get their ESP, as they even pay
for breakage due to accident or abuse).

Yes, indeedie. And since the authorization for those of us on the team to use
those frequencies happens to be tied directly and exclusively to the
activation of a SAR mission there's quite a grey area for us --- if I'm only
authorized to use the frequency during an emergency, and all I have is a
non-type accepted rig, isn't the issue of illegal/legal transmission somewhat
muddled?

I asked my landlady how old she is and she wouldn't tell me. 'That's OK,'
I says, 'I'll just wait until you go to sleep tonight then I'll cut you
in half and count the rings.'... The cops didn't think it was funny,
neither. -- Bug-Eyed Earl
