Bill:

I was curious, so I called both Yaesu tech support and RT Systems (the
makers of the programming software).

Yaesu said it wasn't a "recommended mod", but that the software freq
change using the programmer shouldn't hurt the radio.

When I called RT Systems, the gentleman I spoke with said the radio was
only capable of receiving from 100-180 and 375-525 MHZ. Anything out of
those freqs would not be heard at all...

Does this help you any?

The actual mod:

Go to win.ini and look for a section that contains ALLOWANYFREQUENCY = 0.
Change the 0 to a 1. RESTART WINDOWS. You can then program in just about
any frequency FROM YOUR PC...THIS DOESN'T CHANGE THE KEYPAD ENTRY, but
only freqs in the range above will be heard.

On a related topic, does anyone know of any documentation on the actual
protocol used between the radio and the computer? Since I use a Mac, the
software that Yaesu sells is useless to me. Looking at what it does, I
think I could cobble together a usable Mac version without too much
trouble if I had the spec.

If you use the software mod, or for that matter, the hardware mods,
any previous profiles that you have stored will not work. Each time a
mod is performed, it changes the profile and that profile will only
work with the radio in the condition it was in when the profile was
created. Hope this saves you some programming grief. 73's

I recently purchased an FT51R from Hong Kong. It allows frequency entry from
60Mhz to 999Mhz but receive does seem to be limited to the above range of
freqs apart from UHF does at least cover 870-890Mhz
Tx is from 125-180Mhz and 320-485Mhz

What is the software mod and how is it setup through the computer program?

Thanks

I just bought a ft 51r and the software. It's my first rig, so I'm not
completely fimaliar with the purposes of all the features. From what I
can tell its a great radio.

All that is included with the software is a disk and the serial cable. IT
works with a few other yaseu radios, I don't it works with any you
mentioned.
This is how it works. Open the program, set your memories, offsets, pls,
tx power, battery saver, etc etc. Then you download the info to the
radio. Everything appears on the radio. It's not an active controll in
that you use the computer to change freqs while your talking.

Hope that helps a little

So?

Start a thread asking whatever it is you want.

Don't dredge up a 20 year old post, quoting all the text, and then not
having anything really relevant to add.
