I haven't really gotten this radio ready for sale, yet - and frankly, I'm a
bit reluctant too - it was my first HF radio - bought used back when I was
in high school (worked all summer for it) - but in any case, it's a spare
now. But there is some sentimental value with it.
Kenwood TS-430S
The radio has the FM module installed (very rare to find) - as well as the
AM filter (a must if you are going to do 75m AM). The radio definately
shows its age - having been a 1994 or 1995 production item. But, it's
relatively clean - has some scratches, but none of the buttons or labels are
worn off. It works completely fine. I've used it as my only HF rig since
1989. It's been modified for 1.8 to 30mhz transmit and receive (a simple
mod - just pulling a jumper from the board). I had a blast using this unit
in AF MARS, Civil Air Patrol, and dragging it out to field day several times
and giving it a good solid workout.
Kenwood AT-250
This is the outboard automatic antenna tuning unit for the TS-430S (and the
Kenwood 140/680). This was bought new. The only problem is that the
display lamp is intermittant. It's too deep in the unit for me to get in
there to replace it - or at least, it looked that way the last time I tried
to go in there and fiddle with it (several years ago).
Kenwood PS-430
This is the matching speaker unit for the Kenwood 430, 440, 180, etc series
of radios. I bought this item new.
If I do decide to sell, I'd like to sell the entire thing as a package. I
have the original boxes for all of it.
Anyway - what's a fair price to ask for the whole package? I've seen
430's going for around $300 - $400, the speaker for $75 or more, and the
Auto Tuner for around $250. But adding that together, even I wouldn't buy
the package for $700 - you can get brand new ones for not that much more.
Thanks!

Well, yes and no. $700 isn't going to buy you as much station, unless you're
going for a 706 because it's compact. $450 to $500 isn't unusual for a 430s
with FM installed, and narrow CW and AM filters, along with the MARS mod and
VOX. The AT-250 is a solid $250, and the speaker SP430 is about $60 to $80,
depending on condition.
Do you have the matching power supply? If you do, and it is a PS-50 (heavy
duty), it's worth at least $100 more than the PS-430 or whatever the model
number was, worth about $100 to $150. Your complete system with the medium duty
power supply could net as much as $1K to the right informed buyer who knows that
FM is installed, along with whatever filters you have added. The casual buyer
will likely pass it up.
Good luck on the sale. I have the exact same station with the PS-50 and the
MC-80 desk and TT hand mic and mobile bracket. I may be doing the same soon, as
I haven't run HF since before this last cycle got good. My last contact was on
10M in 1998. XYL gave me too much flack about the old antenna farm, so we
packed it in...

The rig might get $450.
I bought tuner for$175
Power supply $125 max
TOTAL $750.
Problem? No matter how good it is, it is near 10 yrs old. Unless it is
PRISTEEN, I would not expect much more.
Good luck, I hope you get $1 million!

I bought my TS-430S in 1984 and a year or two later it was
superceded by the TS-440 and later the 450, which is now
long of tooth too.
It was a great radio for its day, but much more than $450
for the whole schmear is being unrealistic, UNLESS you sell
the components separately. Just my opinion.

Based on all your comments, I think selling the parts separately is the way
to go. I'm sure there are some 140 owners out there who would want the
auto-tuner. I'll be cleaning up the radio in the coming days and will
probably throw it up here and sell it individually with maybe a package deal
to someone who wants the whole mess.
