You can't clear an individual memory from the front panel of the radio.
You can remove it from normal selection, but you can't get it to go back
to the "unused" status it originally had (little "u" showing up when
you select it).
Two ways that you can make it unused again:
- reset the radio completely, clearing all memories
- use the ADMS-1 software (or any other programming software - there
are alternatives) to program the radio. This reloads all memories,
including marking unused ones "unused".
I have the ADMS-1 software, and I never program more than 1 or 2
frequencies by hand from the front panel. Beyond that, I always use
the software. This also lets me have several different "personalities"
for the radio - one that loads the memories with amateur repeaters,
another that adds the channels for a local sports event our club
provides communications for, another for scanning aircraft frequencies,
another for marine frequencies, and so on.

And what Jim describes _IS_ in the manual, on page 31 (Memory Masking).
By the way, you, and everyone else, is right, there is no way to erase
a single memory (the radio has to be reset, erasing all the memories, or
reprogrammed with the software).
