Yaesu FT-470 Back-up battery keeps draining

My trusty FT-470 has had amnesia for a long time now.
every time i replaced the CR2025 internal lithium cell, the new one would only
last a month or so before going dead.
sent it to Yaesu and they replaced the diode across it but that didn't help.
The next thing they suggested was to replace the motherboard,but that seems
rather excessive, (since it would cost more then the radio is worth)

Any Ideas?
Is it possible to get schematics of whats going on in there?

I've been toying with the idea of simply bringing out the battery leads and
taping on two AA batteries, kinda crazy but...

my best bet would be to buy a new radio (ha!) and use this as a base
station/packet radio etc...
