Buy the 500 Hz filter for the first IF. Then later, if you want to get really
sharp filters, you can buy the 250 Hz filter for the second IF. The 250 Hz
filter is not available for the first IF.

There's a 270Hz filter for the 8.8 Mhz IF.

I think that in the 450 (I own one too) the first IF is the 8.83. I
actually have the 450 and it came with the 500 hz CW in the 455 IF.
Works fine. I'm probably going to get the 1.8 khz ssb for the 8.83, and
then maybe the 270 hz CW for the 8.83.
You should probably check on which IF is first, though. I couldn't find
it in the instruction manual, but I think that what's above is ok. Try
calling kewnwood, or mailing them over the net.
Good luck!

Ben,
As a happy TS450 owner, I might be able to help here. I used both the
8.8mhz and 455khz 500 hz filters and did not notice too much of a
difference. I eventually replaced the 455khz with the 270hz narrow CW
filter--love that one!!!! If you are serious about CW consider owning
both. If you don't need the 270hz, I'd probably put the 500hz in the
455khz IF.

I have a TS-850S with the 500 Hz filter in the 455kHz IF. I chose it
over the 8.83 filter because it has a much better shape factor. Both
filters have a 6 dB bandwith of 500Hz. But at 60 dB points, the 455
filter's bandwith is 820 Hz compared to the 8.83 filter's 1.5 kHz. So
the 6:60 shape factor for the 455 filter is 1.64, compared to 3.0 for the
8.83 filter. In crowded band conditions you'd appreciate the difference.
