The radio has an intermittent problem with the LCD displaying garbage.
The radio continues to receive/transmit fine. The internal lithium
battery measures at 3.25V, so I assume it is fine. Resetting the
radio's microprocessor by holding the MR button down during power up
does not cure the problem.
I have taken the radio apart, re-soldered connections, re-seated the
display, etc..., to no avail. I do not have documentation other than
what came in the manual. I have heard that if the backup battery
voltage is low, this can cause the problem. The battery seems fine to
me if the voltage is at 3.25V. It is also soldered down.
Someone mentioned in a recent QST magazine a similar problem but I lost
the magazine.
Anyone have any ideas? Please e-mail at: ag...@ix.netcom.com

Just bought one myself and have had no problems with it. I did read,
however, that voltage spikes in the dc can cause display malfunctions.
You can fix them, apparently, by resetting the cpu (see instruction
book)

I had the same problem. I sent the radio to Kenwood for warranty
repair. The problem was apparently a bad transistor, not just in my
radio, but in many of their 241A's. I had a similar problem with my
microphone -- a problem that was inherent with all 241A microphones.
It seems as if Kenwood knows that there are problems with their 241 line,
but will not recall any of them. They just hope that the owners will not
eventually stumble upon them. Then when you call them, they play
stupid. That's what bugged methe most! My $0.01 ($0.02 after taxes).

I had the same problems described above in my 241. Mike DTMF crapped
out and the 241 display goes crazy once in a while. I found a place
on the display bezel that, if i push on it with my thumb, it will
clear the problem. Haven't tried to fix it otherwise. Tried to fix
mike and spent 12 bux for new chip...not the problem. Priced a new
mike (85 bux) and finally bought a spare for a ham in CA who had his
rig stolen. Still have crapped out mike (no DTMF) but everything else
worx ok. Anybody got any ideas on how the working class ham can get
these fixed???

Have'nt had the problem with the display but the mike on my radio
lost its push to talk after about 2 years. Cost as much as a new
one to fix so I use the one from my TS440. Anybody have a clue
what's wrong?
