I have an early serial number FT-920. Today I sent it back to Yaesu
California for the third time. The first time was for the NB/MONI ground
loop design flaw. The second time was due to the tuner circuitry failing.
Today the exact same tuner problem started again.

I have never owned a radio with so many problems is so short a time. As a
matter of fact, until I bought this Yaesu product, I never had ANY problems
with my radios (all Kenwood).

Be warned. My FT-920 has been a disaster. If you decide to buy one, at least
go forward with your eyes open.

I also have one from the first batch. Only the NB problem - no other problems
whatsoever! I love it!

Mine's been fine and it's an early one-purchased at Dayton '97. The NB/Mon
is a legit complaint but I just turn down the monitor gain and it's gone.
I'm going to wait a few more months and send it into Yaesu before it's out
of warranty. Note I've also got a 1000D and 1000MP and I like 'em all for
different reasons. You may want to check out WM7D's web page on the 920. I
think if you handle this properly that Yaesu will make good on this radio. I
appreciate your frustration-try to hang in there and approach it in a
gentlemanly and businesslike manner. Best wishes and happier new year !

Hmmm. Maybe that's why they're on special here at the moment for $2995
including power supply?

There's still much to be said for buyilding one's own.

Well, I bought the 920 in Oct. and it has been back to Yaesu twice. Once
because it would not transmit and once because the max power out was 3
watts! I just got it back from Yaesu for the second problem and find
that they broke the main VFO tuning dial. It is VERY loose. Seems about
to fall off in fact. Quality service on a quality radio......
I have E-mailed them about this and am waiting for a reply. Will keep you
posted.

=============
I heard on a local 2 meter repeater that a local ham had an early
production 920 that went back to Yaesu 2 times. The third time, he
demanded a new unit and actually got one from a later production run.
The new one is satisfactory. Don't know any more details.

I'm sorry to hear this. I've noticed that a lot of the newer rigs are hitting
the market with all kinds of bugs and such. The IC756 comes to mind, as
well as the Yaesu FT920, the Kenwood 950 had tons of bugs when it came
out so its not just recent less expensive rigs. I purposely purchased my
FT920 several months after it came out (even though thats no guarentee
either) just to avoid such bugs. I'm sure your faith in this rig is
questionable at this point, but I would like to encourage you to hang in there
and give Yaesu a chance to make good on it. They do have an excellant service
department (from what I've heard) and tend to make good on their equipment.

This sounds funny coming from an X-Kenwood biggot, but I really like my
FT920, and have found it to be an excellent rig for the money! Anyway, I
wish you the best of luck, and hang in there. 73 all, Mike - WQ0N

It seems that the old ham rule of not buying a radio unless it has been
on the market for one year holds true.
