I have purchased a Kantronics KAM Plus. I am testing various software for it. I have tested
KAGOLD, XPKAM and KAMWIN.

I find KAGOLD not as user friendly as I expected.

KAMWIN is still in the development stage.

XPKAM so far comes closer to meeting my needs than the other two.

Any suggestions to what other software is available for the KAM?

Phil check out the newest version of WinLink if your looking for a
windows program. My all time favorite is Lan-Link now in version 2.32
which is still a DOS program.

I found KAGOLD a totally frustrating program for use on
Pactor/Amtor/Gtor.....on Packet it was OK I guess. But I
like an all in one program.

Oh....the Aussie program Paket 6.1 is excellant once you
figure out how to run it. A lot of guys give up too quickly on
it. I am waiting for them to bring out a GTOR version and
then will re-evaluate.

Hi Frank, what the heck is Winlink? Lan link for windows?
And where can I find it? :)

No. Winlink is Aplink for windows, and, while a very fine program, is
probably NOT what you're looking for. Winlink implements an HF MBO - the
HF equivalent of a packet BBS and much more - and requires a BIG
commitment of equipment and energy.

If you're looking for a windows program for your Kam, download KaWin and
give it a try. If you can sweat your way past the irritation of the nag
meter, you'll find a fine host mode program that does about everything
you'd want.

Frank:

Interesting your perception of KaGold. Have been using it for several years
while also trying most of the others. Always come back to Gold. I find it
clean, straight forward, especially easy to grasp and use: it's intuitive -
except for some of the more obscure commands, you don't even need to read the
users manual.

On the other hand !!! Just received KAM firmware 8.0 (which work fine) and
also ordered Hostmaster II+. What a poor program - kantronics should be
giving that away for free just as they were (are) pacterm. Johnson's xpkam is
far superior to Hostmaster and both are a very distant 2nd/3rd to KaGold.

Gonna be on 6-m for meteor show ?? How about 1200 baud fm packet on 50.62 ?

Hi Richard:
I'm using the Kam Plus with Host Master and have never heard of the
program Ka Gold. Is this a shareware program and can you tell me where to
get the program.
Not on 6 meters but have fun.

I have been using KaWin for a few months now. It works fine and does the job.

KaWin is not freeware but you can down load it from the net and give it
a test drive.

The package is written by Stan Huntting of Boulder, Co.
Stan has been receptive to Email and the package is maturing well.

Stan, I appreciate that you're trying to make a buck by plugging your
program on Internet...but calling the "feature" in your code a Nag-Meter
is an understatement.

Why not tell it like it is? In all actuality, after running your program
for 15 mintues, your program does its very best to try to crash all programs
running and hang the system - leaving only the big-red-switch as an exit.
If you wish to distribute crippleware, figure out a better way of "exiting
gracefully".

Well, mine exits gracefully, but the reason I'm not test driving it is
that I don't want to be in the middle of a QSO and have the program
exit! Operating in a digital mode, you can't simple key out your call,
or pick up a mic to wrap up the QSO. Doc says that you should be able
to re-run the program and pick up where you left off, but I don't want
to risk it.

The program could simply not run again if it was being used too much, or
simply not allow a 'transmit' condition. No one leaves their computers
on *forever* running just one program (after all, this *is* Windows &
therefor needs to be rebooted every few hours ;-) ) so testing at
startup should be fine.
